Natural Resources
 Natural resources occur naturally within environments that exist relatively
undisturbed by mankind , in a natural form.
 A natural resource is often characterized by amounts of bio-diversity and geo-
diversity existent in various ecosystems.
 Natural resources are derived form the environment. Many of them are essential for
our survival while others are used for satisfying our wants.

Management
Natural resources management is a discipline in the
management of natural resources such as land , water , soil ,
plants and animals , with a particular focus on how
management affects the quality of life for both present and
future generations.
Natural resource management is interrelated with the
concept of sustainable development , a principle that forms
the basis for land management and environmental
governance throughout the world.
In contrast to the policy emphases of urban planning and
the broader concept of environmental management , natural
resource management specifically focuses on a scientific and
technical understanding of resources and ecology and the life
supporting capacity of those resources.
Depletion
In recent years , the depletion of natural resources and attempts
to move to sustainable development has been a major focus of
development agencies.
This is a particular concern in rain forest regions , which hold

          the Earth’s natural bio-diversity – irreplaceable genetic
natural capital of natural resources is the major focus of natural
capitalism , environmentalism , the ecology movement and green
politics. Some view this depletion as a major source of social unrest
and conflicts in developing nations.
Mining , petroleum extraction , fishing , hunting and forestry are
generally considered natural resource industries. Agriculture is
considered a man made resource.
Protection
Conservation biology is the scientific study of the nature
and the status of the Earth’s bio-diversity with the aim of
protecting species , their habitats and ecosystems from
excessive rates of extinction.
It is an interdisciplinary subject drawing on sciences ,
economics and the practice of natural resource
management.
Habitat conservation is a land management practice
that seeks to conserve , protect and restore , habitat areas
for wild and plants and animals especially conservation
reliant species and prevent their extinction ,
fragmentation or reduction in range.
HMMMM....
What do you think
 nonrenewable
 resources are?

 Break it down...

 Nonrenewable?
NUCLEAR ENERGY
        Nuclear fission uses
        uranium to create
             energy.

         Nuclear energy is a
           nonrenewable
       resource because once
       the uranium is used, it
              is gone!
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS
 Coal, petroleum, and
    natural gas are
      considered
nonrenewable because
    they can not be
 replenished in a short
 period of time. These
are called fossil fuels.
HOW IS COAL MADE ???
WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE
  BETWEEN COAL AND
       OIL/GAS?
All are fossil fuels which means that they were
formed from plants and animals from millions
of years ago.

Coal is a solid. It is mostly carbon. It is made
from mostly plant materials.

Oil is a liquid. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons.
It is more animal materials. Its composition is
different depending on where it is found.

Natural gas is a gas. It is mostly methane, CH4.
HMMMM....

    If nonrenewable
 resources are resources
that cannot be re-made
 at a scale comparable
   to its consumption,
  what are renewable
        resources?
RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Renewable resources are
natural resources that can be
replenished in a short period
of time.

● Solar ● Geothermal
● Wind ● Biomass
● Water
SOLAR

 Energy from the
      sun.

  Why is energy
  from the sun
   renewable?
This form of energy relies on the nuclear fusion power
from the core of the Sun. This energy can be collected
and converted in a few d ifferent ways. The range is
from solar water heating with solar collectors or attic
cooling with solar attic fans for d om estic use to the
com plex technologies of d irect conversion of sunlight
to electrical energy using m irrors and boilers or
photovoltaic cells. U nfortunately these are currently
insufficient to fully power our m od ern society.
GEOTHERMAL
  Energy from Earth’s heat.

Why is energy from the heat of
   the Earth renewable?
