4. Classroom Rules Be respectful to yourself and others. Be polite and courteous at all times. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking during lessons. Keep your hands to yourself. Be quiet in lines, hallways, and restrooms. Obey school policies.
5. Consequences If these rules are broken, there will be consequences. Each child will start the day with 3 “lights”- redat the top, then yellow below, then greenon the bottom. We will follow “stop-light” discipline. We will start with a warning. After the warning, one light at a time with be taken away starting with green and down the line.
6. Restroom/Drink/Office Trips We will have a very special way of leaving and returning to the room independently: On the left and right side of the door there will be 3 necklaces- one that reads “Drink”, one that reads “Bathroom”, and one that reads “Office.” The left hand side is for the girls and the right for the boys. These should be worn while making a quick and responsible trip to and from your destination. The student will need to raise there hand and ask permission to leave the classroom before collecting their necklace.
7. Transitioning to New Places When we are leaving the class to go to lunch/recess or one of our specials we will have a routine. It is called “1, 2, 3.” I will prompt the class it is time to leave. On the count of: 1-We will all clear our desks and put our belongings inside. 2-We will all quickly and quietly stand and push in our chairs. 3-We will make a single file line at the door. We will practice “hugs and bubbles.” A hug is used to keep our hands to ourselves and off the walls. Our bubble will be a bubble in out mouths which keep us from talking!
10. What other forms of discipline may be used? The stop light method should work effectively but if there is failure in that then parents and principal will be contacted.
11. Why would you call my parents? If grades are failing or there seems to be a sudden, drastic change in behavior/attitude. Also, if we have discipline issues.
12. Do we celebrate birthdays? Yes, students are allowed to bring quick and easy snacks. We will make time to share and celebrate!
13. Are we allowed to have food and drinks in class? Yes, in the morning there is an allotted time for us to have a snack.
14. Do I have a classroom job? Yes, each week 5 students will be chosen to fulfill one of our classroom jobs.

Remind students how excited you are about having them as part of their very special class and reassure them that we are going to learn tons of fun new things but also have fun!
Tardy- Must check in at the office.Dismissal-you will be released based on bus riders, after school care, or parent pick up. Morning announcements- Discuss daily plan- what material we have already covered (review) and what new material will be learned.Overview of what we are going to do for the math lesson…example: individual work, group, etc.Bathroom break- half the girls and half the guys go to restroom and then the other half of the groups. Eat and clean up snack within 10 minutes.Language arts/reading- do daily journal, review previous days work, introduce new materialGo to assigned specialPick up lunch boxes/money, half an hour for lunch then second hour recess (in or outside to be determined)Science/Social studies- review previous days material, introduce new materialsClean up- wipe desks, someone cleans boards, someone sharpens pencils (complete assigned weekly tasks), get backpacks and line up for dismissal.
Explain the importance of these rules to the classroom and school. Explain which rules are most important both in and outside of school. Overview school policies which they should already know (ex. Never leave the school building unless with parent or teacher)
Remind students about the secondary consequences for each light lost. For the green light, it is simply a second warning. If the yellow light is removed due to breaking rules- the student will be required to write an apology not to teacher and/or peer addressing the problem. Third and finally for the red light the student will again need to write a letter, visit the principals office, and depending on the offense there may be a phone call or letter send home.
Be sure students know where the necklaces are hanging. Make sure they are all there each morning- 3 on each side. Be sure the students ask permission before leaving and return the necklace when they get back.
Be sure to remind students before going to new places how it is that we get there! We want to have our spaces nice and neat- pushing in chairs, clearing desktop, and standing in a nice straight line.
Review with students and ask if they or their parents have any known questions. Be sure that a copy of this whole presentation goes home with students. Include note stating that if there are more parent questions I am happy to be contacted by phone or email. These are just a few of the questions to get through with classroom management. There is a full handbook stating Q&A and school policies.
