by texts – knowing when text is written
there are more than 1000 texts available
there were more than 10000 texts but majority
were burnt by Alexander
still we have series and groups of texts
texts refer about masters and disciples

tradition here – we call as an institution not custom ,
belief, and rituals

By oral tradition- knowing masters-disciple tradition
(oral tradition) existed for 500 yrs.

Namaste – meaning , I am you and you are me

•

Message of highest state of consciousness

•

Mostly Indians and other Asian countries wish by Namaste

•

Represents yoga tradition and symbolic recall of the ‘realself’

•

Discovery of Real-self beyond body, life, mind – goal of
yoga

•

Awakens to Oneness, Unitary consciousness

Surya Namaskar – in physical , in mantra , in ritual

•

There is a custom to bow down to Surya in the
morning

•

There is custom to offer water to sun

•

Water represents mental equanimity

Note :In 5 –series on Authentic Yoga Tradition, I will highlight many
practices of yoga that has become part of Indian Culture. People are not
aware if they are practicing Yoga

Sun and moon represents two flow of nostrils

Sun is right flow and moon is left flow

•

Represents two hemispheres of brain

•

Balancing is the key

•

In marriage , it is known costmary bride- bridegroom
to sit on right-left sides – Part of yoga

Still exists in the mind of every Indian

•

There are four ashrams (lifestyles) of human race

•

Brahmcharya – young age devoted to learning

•

Grishasta – devoted to material pleasure to gain experience

•

Vanaprastha – preparing for retired yogic life

•

Sanyasa – living life for ultimate evolution – self discovery

It is essentially a part of Yoga tradition that classifies the life into four
levels that keeps reminding of ultimate journey

Subjective experimentation done in all possible ways

•

Used the body as an instrument

•

Body subjected to extreme conditions

•

To awaken to higher consciousness

•

Commonly termed as Tapasya ( penance)

Mahavira took food only 12 times in 12 years

• Key/ goal/secret is ART
• ART – awakening , realization and transformation
• Wake up – wake up to the same world again and
again
• Awaken – awaken to a new world within, beyond
body, life, mind etc.
• Awaken to the presence – existence beyond mind
• It may be peace, or happiness, wisdom, pure
awareness, love or….

Realization – presence becomes now permanent

•

It influences the body, life, mind and the world we
live in

•

It is change effected from inside to outside

•

Realization that there is ‘higher consciousness’

Transformation is mutation of mind and the brain
