Will Africa Sing a Song of Me?
Your Legacy
If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe
and the African new moon lying on her
back, of the plows in the fields and the
sweaty faces of the coffee pickers, does
Africa know a song of me?
Will the air over the plain quiver with a
color that I have had on, or the children
invent a game in which my name is, or the
full moon throw a shadow over the gravel
of the drive that was like me, or will the
eagles of the Ngong Hills look out for me?

Your Story’s Focus
Is your story of
1) a character
2) a place
3) an event?
In Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland, is it Alice’s
story or a story about
Wonderland?
Carroll, L., & Kelly, R. (Ed.). (2000). Alice's adventures in Wonderland. Peterborough, Ontario, CA: Broadview Press.

Is Your Story Nonfiction or Fiction?
Is it real?
Is it memoir?
Is it authentic?
Are there privacy issues?
Confidentiality
Do you need an alias?
Do you need to adapt it?
Fiction
Is it genre or literary fiction?
Will the people featured in your story feel safe if others recognize their story?
9. Literary Fiction vs. Genre Fiction
Genre fiction transforms the character.
The character is irrevocably changed after the
Hero’s Journey.
Literary fiction transforms the reader.
A literary story transcends the rules of genre
fiction.
It uses parallels, symbolism, and metaphor
with emotion and tension to make characters
feel real and an impossible story believable
(Maass, 2009).

your novel great. Cincinnati, OH: Writers Digest Books.
