2. INTRODUCTION
• Through the Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley,
Lynn Hildebrand serves as a humane education teacher
for children. Complementing her work with the Humane
Society, Lynn Hildebrand stays active in her local
community as a Sunday school instructor at First
Congregational Church in Corona.
While people today associate Sunday schools with
religious learning supplemental to a formal education at a
private or public academy, Sunday schools were originally
intended to teach children how to read. The Christian
movement to create these literacy centers started in late
18th century England. During this period, many children
spent six days a week working in factories, leaving little
time for even basic education.

3. SUNDAY SCHOOLS
• Child laborers did, however, get Sundays off for
religious services. The movement intended for
churches to enroll these children in Sunday school,
which practiced according to a curriculum partially
dedicated to literacy and learning the Bible. The
movement spread fast, with thousands of Sunday
schools popping up only a few years after they first
were established. Eventually, the institution spread to
the United States and other parts of the Christian
world.
