Human Geography

What will I learn Today?
 How to differentiate between the
physical and human environment
 To identify either Physical or Human
Our Environment
• Environment simply means the
surroundings in which we live
• The environment can be physical or
human

Physical
Environment

Environment
Things that
occur naturally
on Earth (eg.
Mountains,
Volcanoes)
Environment which
is man-made
is the study of natural world. for
e.g.mountains,weather/climate,volcanoes,
natural disasters, animals,seas and ocean
etc. Basically anything that is about
nature and how the world works.
Is concern with the
lithosphere,atmosphere,hydrosphere and
biosphere.
Physical GeographyPhysical Geography
Lithosphere- is made up of landforms near or at the surface of the
earth comprised of solid and distegrated rock and the soil cover on
the surface.
The hydrosphere- is the section containing water in all its three
states, while the atmosphere is the sphere of air around the earth.
Human Geography
 Is the study of how the humans have affected by
the environment and why civilizations are where
they are.

Human Environment
We need the physical environment to meet our
needs
We obtain food from plants and animals, wood
from trees and water from rivers
Materials we use from the physical
environment is called natural resources
When we extract and use these natural
resources we often change the physical
environment
Composed largely of human elements.
- Human modifications/ changes to the
physical environment (e.g. building
industries, offices, clearing forests for
residential uses)

geography.
Some of the phenomena studied in physical and human
geography.
An interrelationship exists between people
and the environment
The environment influences the way people
live and people change the environment
according to their needs
Physical environment has been altered with
the help of technology
Technology here refers to the skills,
knowledge and tools that people use to meet
their needs
