CASE: Pizza Masters
Pizza Masters is a specialized pizzeria locate on Commercial
Drive, in Vancouver. The restaurant can seat up to 35 patrons at
a time and has built up a significant take-out service providing
traditional pizza cooked in a wood burning oven to the locals on
the drive for over 40 years. The head chef Martin Luongo has a
well-established reputation, which also brings in customers
from all over the city and surrounding areas.
Martin was always skilled in the kitchen and his love of cooking
was how Pizza Masters began. Martin knew he could not run a
business by himself and so he sought out a partner, Anthony
Spezaiachello, who was known for his entrepreneurial spirit and
keen sense for a solid business venture. Martin and Anthony ran
the business together for over 35 years and then Anthony sold
out his share of the company to a new owner that struggled to
manage the business; however, Martin’s solid pizza reputation
kept customers coming back.
Martin is now ready to retire and is looking to find someone to
buy out his share of the business. His kitchen staff have
developed their own relationships with the customers over the
years and are stable employees, with three full time and seven
8. part time staff to keep the kitchen operating at full capacity. To
maintain the client interface there are four servers that rotate
schedules to manage the operating hours of the business. Martin
has confidence that with these staff the business will continue
to operate successfully with a quality pizza.
Martin knows that he can’t just sell off his share of the
business, but needs to find the best way to manage his
retirement exit. His grandson recommended you, a business
consultant, to provide him with a more “structured” analysis of
his business so that he can clearly provide a potential new
owner with an understanding of who the stakeholders and
shareholders are to the business, and understand the ways they
may be impacted with Martin’s departure.
You sit down to write this email on June 8, you would like
Martin to review the information, as you know having a good
understanding of the impact stakeholders currently have on a
business can assist in managing the changes ahead and how the
change will impact each stakeholder is an important part of the
decision process. You will follow up with a phone call early
next week to answer any questions and discuss next steps for his
upcoming exit in the business. Martin’s email is
