2. BBC- Three
The BBC also known as the British corporation are a large national broadcaster
based at the broadcasting house at London.
The BBC are a large conglomerate producing and distributing their own content on
their own channel. They first started off in 1922 on November 14.
They then started broadcasting 24 hours a day to make it a non stopping channel.
In 2003 BBC three was produced aiming at 16-34 year olds therefore they could watch the
documentary before or after the watershed as it is over after 9pm. BBC Three is the BBC's
youth-orientated television channel, its remit to provide "innovative programming" to a target
audience of viewers between 16 and 34 years old, leveraging technology as well as new talent.
Unlike its commercial rivals, 90% of BBC Three's output originated from the United Kingdom.
Notable exceptions were Family Guy and American Dad (both of them originating in the United
States). It and sister channel BBC Four also carry occasional BBC Sport programming as an
overflow for the BBC's other channels.
3. Audience
I am aiming my documentary between people of the ages
of 16 and 24. the age that BBC three aim at are to the age
of 36, however I would like to inspire people the same
age as myself, and I would also like to help my age group
understand the idea I have and hopefully inspire them to
get involved with further hobbies for example I am
wanting to show the progress of music as well as show
some peers that have produced and or make music.
I will be making it interesting , up-beat as well as eye
catching as many of my audience explained they watch
documentaries however knowing with prior experience if
it does not look good people wont watch it and as it is
aimed at high achievers as well as people who inspire to
get involved with the subject.
4. Northern voices.
All this week we're announcing the 69 talented emerging writers from across the UK who
have taken part in our Voices development programme for 2022. Today it's the turn of
the 14 Northern Voices.
"We’re delighted to announce the 14 writers we’ve been working with from across the
North of England, over the past few months. We’ve really enjoyed getting to know this
talented group of writers and helping them to develop TV Treatments that showcase
their authentic and original voice. The Voices Programmes has enabled the writers to
develop their craft and allowed them the time, support and creative space to work on
ideas they’re burning to write about. It’s been so great to see their creative growth and
we’re excited to see what they do next!"
This is what the BBC released on their blog about the northern voices. This is to give an
understanding of what BBC three have organised for northern voices
5. My idea.
My initial idea is based upon music progression. I would like to highlight the progression from old music to
new , I would like to include some interviews with some bands as well as interviews with a peer that has
recently got into music. I am going to be talking about how online technology has increased the popularity of
music as well as looking at vinyl records, CD’s and tapes. I will be looking at technology's such as Spotify ,
apple music, amazon music and how that has pushed the streams and helped smaller bands get more
recognised. I would also like to inspire young people to get into music as it has helped with mental health. I
will be speaking with some people that have benefited from music in a mental way. This will be able to show
how music has developed over the years I will be looking back on the different genres and how it has changed
for example metal has became more mainstream however classical music is not as listened too as other
genres. I will be looking mainly at the development of newer genres over the last 50-60years. I want to also
include some videos of people playing instruments to show what can be done through music. These will also
be accompanied by interviews with the people explaining what has got them to this point and why
6. Inspiration
This is one documentary that I will be taking some
inspiration from as it is one of my favourite genres to
cover. This documentary mainly focuses on the progress
of the band Metallica, however I am taking the style as my
inspiration. It includes footage from when the band first
started. It shows flashbacks to the band , there are many
shots of then and now showing a clear story line to not
only the music but the individual band members. I am to
make something similar however I will be aiming it at a
younger audience as I feel as though this documentary is
very old and outdated and I would like to target it to
more people by including more genres and bands/ artists.
9. As we can see from this all my target audience
listen to music if not all of the time. This proves
that my audience are engaged with music hand
have some knowledge of the music world and
dynamic. Rock and pop are the two most popular
music sub genres. As there is equal votes on the
other genres , I will be making sure I use all of
these in my documentary as I can increase a
target audience by using more engaging and
audience based interests.
This also proves that my target audience have watched
documentaries, however have not yet watched one on
music. I would like to break the usual codes and
conventions as I would like to open an opportunity for
my target audience to do so , as it is something many
people are interested in and involves everyday life as we
know it. Many people listen to music daily and I would
like to open more gaps for people to discover and learn
more about the subject. As we can see some people
have already watched them such as the bloodstock
documentary that I have researched and analysed.
10. As we can see some people would watch a documentary
on music and others would consider doing so. Therefore I
am going to use my target research to understand what
they would be attracted to watching and use this to
persuade them to watch the documentary. Many people
have said they would like to learn from other people by
seeing interviews, visual performances. I will use this to
target my audience and include everything they want to
see as this can draw them into watching the documentary
and can increase my audience.
Here are some more of what people would like to
see in my documentary, I am going to aim to
provide most of these within my documentary. As
we can see may people would like the documentary
to last around 10-15 mins and maybe more. I will be
making it no longer than 30 minutes as I would like
it to be short and snappy to grab the attention of
my audience and give them a quick teaser into the
music world and the smaller communities within
sub – genres.
11. Focus group questions
- What documentaries are you into ?
- How long would you like the documentary to be
- Do you listen to music ?
- What kind of music do you listen to ?
- Have you ever been do a concert or a gig ?
- Do you enjoy live music?
- Would you get into music, as in playing or preforming ?
- And finally have you ever used a music streaming platform ?

My focus group explaining my ideas-
As we can see I decided to also do a focus group to help me understand more of my target
audience, I used some of my friends and peers. I got some great responses. I wanted to do this to
show a more in depth understanding. I asked questions on what they mainly listen too and some of
their hobbies which corresponded well with
