1. Brown Eye-Blue Eye Experiment
After watching Jane Elliot’s experiment on blue eyed and brown eyed students, we
discussed what point she was trying to make. Jane is an anti-racismactivist and conducted this
experiment for her class the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed. Years later in a college
class, for one of her numerous experiments, she put the white blue/green eyed students in the
middle of the classroomsurrounded by white and black people with brown eyes. She treated
the blue/green eyed students the way that most non-white races are treated every day. At one
point, one girl gets up and leaves the room to get away from the harsh point Jane is making, but
explains that people of the non-white race can’t just get up and leave. They have to deal with
the racism that people throw at them at all times. Her simple commands to the students in the
middle had them stumbling over her strict tone when they couldn’t answer her or do what she
had asked. The “superior” whites aren’t used to being treated as they are inferior. Also notes
that when people say “I don’t see black” makes many African American’s feel washed from
their heritages. They are proud of who they are and the color of their skin. It is as simple as eye
color to bring people’s attention to how many individuals treat those of different races.
