The document provides summaries of the openings of two films - Lord of the Rings and Ju-on: The Grudge. For Lord of the Rings, it describes the text, sound, camera work, mise-en-scene, and editing used in the opening. For Ju-on: The Grudge, it summarizes what is learned about the film's genre and concept of "ju-on", along with the text, sound, camera work, mise-en-scene, and editing in the opening. The summaries effectively convey key details about how each film establishes its genre and tone from the beginning to draw in viewers.
1. Analysing Movie Opining
FILM 1
Name of Film: Lord of the Rings
Genre: Fantasy, Action, Adventure
What you learn
You learn about the races of the world e.g. elves, dwarf and men. You also
learn who the antagonist is. You learn that the plot is about fight the
enemy for a magic ring.
Text
The first text that appears on screen is the logo for the production
company, New Line Cinema and Wingnut Films. The text that appears on
screen is blank with text; the text is a light colour on a dark background,
the font looks like old font e.g. from a quill pen. The title of the film
appears later as gold letters in a dark background.
Sound
The music that plays in the background is very slow and flows very well,
giving off a mystical feeling. At the beginning you can hear a faint voice
whispering something in an unknown language and a louder voice
translating. The same voice can be heard telling the story of âthe great
ringsâ.
Camera Work
There are a lot of extreme close-up this is to give people a closer look at
the rings as they are an essential part of the film. The film uses a wide
shot when they show you the army this is to show how large the army is.
There is an aerial view of a map showing the lands.
Mise en scene
At the beginning it uses a low key lighting as only canals are used to light
the room, this adds to the theme of fantasy as it creates a mysterious
feel. The costumes have a medieval theme; the women have beautiful
dresses and the men are ether in chainmail or thick cloth cloaks. The
scenery is very medieval with grey stone walls of a hall and stone
archways. They use a map to show you most of the land.
2. Edit
The film uses fades to give the audience a feel of magic because it looks
like the people have just faded out of the screen.
Overall effectiveness
I think that the opining was very effective as it made me want to watch
more of it.
FILM 2
Name of Film: Ju-on the grudge
Genre: Horror
What you learn
In the beginning it has a description on the word âju-onâ means âA curse
born of a strong grudge held by someone who died. The place of his death
gathers his grudge. Anyone who comes into contact with this curse shall
lose his life and a new curse is bornâ.
Text
The first text that appears on screen is the meaning of ju-on written in
Japanese and the director and actors name also in Japanese. The tile is
an animated text on a white background; the text starts of looking like
hair branched in blood that flows to the corner spelling out the words Ju-
On.
Sound
The background music is very creepy and flows well, there are a few
diegetic sounds for example traffic, a train and a cat. The diegetic
sound of the cat adds an effect of surprise as at first it is quiet and
then a loud cat hiss is heard.
Camera Work
It stars off with a wide shot of a women walking down some stairs; the
rest of the scene is of her walking down the streets of Japan. There is a
close-up on a roof that zooms out to an extreme close-up of a spider web.
Mise en Scene
The characters costumes are not that exiting as they are just your
everyday clothes. The setting is of a suburb in Japan, most likely Tokyo,
and a normal looking modern Japanese house.
3. Edit
The film mainly uses cut transition to change scenes.
Overall effectiveness
I like the opining as it is simple yet affective and will make you want to
watch more of it.
