Originally presented at: https://spark-summit.org/eu-2017/events/the-state-of-apache-spark-in-the-cloud/ Cloud providers currently offer convenient on-demand managed big data clusters (PaaS) with a pay-as-you-go model. In PaaS, analytical engines such as Spark and Hive come ready to use, with a general-purpose configuration and upgrade management. Over the last year, the Spark framework and APIs have been evolving very rapidly, with major improvements on performance and the release of v2, making it challenging to keep up-to-date production services both on-premises and in the cloud for compatibility and stability. Nicolas Poggi evaluates the out-of-the-box support for Spark and compares the offerings, reliability, scalability, and price-performance from major PaaS providers, including Azure HDinsight, Amazon Web Services EMR, Google Dataproc with an on-premises commodity cluster as baseline. Nicolas uses BigBench, the brand new standard (TPCx-BB) for big data systems, with both Spark and Hive implementations for benchmarking the systems. BigBench combines SQL queries, MapReduce, user code (UDF), and machine learning, which makes it ideal to stress Spark libraries (SparkSQL, DataFrames, MLlib, etc.). The work is framed within the ALOJA research project, which features an open source benchmarking and analysis platform that has been recently extended to support SQL-on-Hadoop engines and BigBench. The ALOJA project aims to lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) of big data deployments and study their performance characteristics for optimization. Nicolas highlights how to easily repeat the benchmarks through ALOJA and benefit from BigBench to optimize your Spark cluster for advanced users. The work is a continuation of a paper to be published at the IEEE Big Data 16 conference.

Performance troubleshooting of distributed data processing systems is a complex task. Apache Spark comes to rescue with a large set of metrics and instrumentation that you can use to understand and improve the performance of your Spark-based applications. You will learn about the available metric-based instrumentation in Apache Spark: executor task metrics and the Dropwizard-based metrics system. The talk will cover how Hadoop and Spark service at CERN is using Apache Spark metrics for troubleshooting performance and measuring production workloads. Notably, the talk will cover how to deploy a performance dashboard for Spark workloads and will cover the use of sparkMeasure, a tool based on the Spark Listener interface. The speaker will discuss the lessons learned so far and what improvements you can expect in this area in Apache Spark 3.0.

Toon is a leading brand in the European smart energy market, currently expanding internationally, providing energy usage insights, eco-friendly energy management and smart thermostat use for the connected home. As value added services become ever more relevant in this market, we have the need to ensure that we can easily and safely on-board new tenants into our data platform. In this talk we’re going to guide you across a less discussed side of using Spark in production – devops. We will speak about our journey from an on-premise cluster to a managed solution in the cloud. A lot of moving parts were involved: ETL flows, data sharing with 3rd parties and data migration to the new environment. Add to this the need to have a multi-tenant environment, revamp our toolset and deploy a live public facing service. It’s possible to find a lot of great examples of how Spark is used for data-science purposes. On the data engineering side, we need to deploy production services, ensure data is cleaned, secured and available, and keep the data-science teams happy. We’d like to share some of the options we took and some of the lessons learned from this (ongoing) transition.

Apache Kylin is a distributed OLAP engine on Hadoop, which provides sub-second level query latency over datasets scaling to petabytes. Kylin’s superior query performance relies on pre-calculated multi-dimension Cube, which is often time-consuming to build. By default, Kylin uses MapReduce Cube Engine built atop of Hadoop MapReduce framework to aggregate huge amounts of source data. The MR Engine has been well-tuned over years and proven to be stable in hundreds of production deployments. Recently, the Kylin team is trying to further speed up the process of cube building by replacing MR with Spark. Kyligence has initiated the new Spark Cube Engine with some benchmarks between Spark and MR over different datasets, and has received some promising results. Hear about their results and experiences on moving Cube building, which is a huge computing task, to Spark.

A session in the DevNet Zone at Cisco Live, Berlin. Deployment of IPv6 is rapidly expanding. Support for IPv6 in applications is lagging behind. Vendors such as Apple are taking steps to rectify this situation and raise awareness to the problem. The session explains why this evolution happens now, including looking at Cisco collected adoption statistics and how IPv4 address exhaustion issues affect application performance. The majority of the session focuses on how applications should adopt and support IPv6. We start with simple dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 support in applications for different operating systems to achieve functional parity with IPv4. We then discuss some of the more interesting ways of delivering applications which are only feasible with IPv6 and we explain how they can help to improve application functionality. The session includes aspects such as utilizing multiple IPv6 addresses, "happy eyeball" techniques, using different type of IPv6 addresses and more. The session will discuss existing and evolving technologies.

Hadoop is often viewed as needing racks of dedicated boxes -despite the fact that in sheer number terms, the majority of Hadoop clusters ever created have been brought up on public cloud infrastructures -particularly Amazon`s. Yet the rest of datacenter computing is moving towards virtualization -be it in-cloud startups or in-enterprise IT departments. Some organizations are standing up private clouds: a rack or two of servers with an API for VM creation. Hadoop can live there -it just needs to integrate better. At the same time, OpenStack is emerging as the de-facto standard open source cloud platform for private use, and is available publicly from a number of cloud infrastructure service providers. This talk looks at what we`ve done -and are doing- to integrate Hadoop with OpenStack. This is taking it beyond Hadoop`s current support for Amazon`s infrastructure, making a combined Hadoop + OpenStack cluster something to consider in-house -and in-cloud. This work is being done in collaboration with members of the OpenStack community, showing how cloud and big data projects can not only co-exist, we can co-develop our platforms.

It helps companies from construction, staffing and transport industries, digitalize, secure and share their legal documents. With clients ranging from one-person businesses to industry leaders such as Orange or Bouygues Construction, they ease business relationships for a social network of companies that would be equivalent to a 34 billion dollar industry. While providing a high quality of service through our SAAS platform, we faced many challenges including refactoring our monolith into microservices, a daunting architectural task a lot of organizations are facing today. Strategies for tackling that problem primarily revolve around extracting business logic from the monolith or building new applications with their own logic that interfaces with the legacy. Sometimes however, especially in companies sustaining an important growth, new business opportunities arise and the required logic from your microservices might greatly differs from the legacy. We will discuss how we used Spark Streaming and Kafka to build a real time business logic translation engine that allows loose technical and business coupling between our microservices and legacy code. You will also hear about how making Apache Spark a part of our consumer facing product also came with technical challenges, especially when it comes to reliability. Finally, we will share the lambda architecture that allowed us to use move data in batch (migrating data from the monolith for initialization) and real time (handling data generated after through use). Key takeaways include: – Breaking down this strategy and its derived technical and business profits – Feedback on how we achieved reliability – Examples of implementations using RabbitMQ (then Kafka) and GraphX – Testing business rules and data transformation.

Over the past year, a lot of progress has been made in advancing the Apache Hadoop platform at Yahoo. We underwent a massive infrastructure consolidation to lower the platform TCO. CaffeOnSpark was open-sourced for distributed deep learning on existing infrastructure with a combination of CPU and GPU-based computing. Traditional compute on MapReduce continues to shift to Apache Tez and Apache Spark for lower processing time. Our internal security, multi-tenancy, and scale changes to Apache Storm got pushed to the community in Storm 0.10. Omid was open-sourced for managing transactions reliably on Apache HBase. Multi-tenancy with region groups, splittable META, ZooKeeper-less assignment manager, favored nodes with HDFS block placement, and support for humongous tables have taken Apache HBase scale to new heights. Dependency management in Apache Oozie for combinatorial, conditional, and optional processing gives increased flexibility to our data pipelines teams in maintaining SLAs. Focus on ease of use and onboarding improvements have brought in a whole new class of use cases and users to the platform. In this talk, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the platform technology stack, recent developments, metrics, and share thoughts on where things are headed when it comes to big data at Yahoo.
