2. How did Buddhism begin?
There once was a Prince called Siddhartha who lived in
India in a beautiful palace. One day, Prince Siddhartha left
the palace. He saw many people who were unhappy.

3. How did Buddhism begin?
He wanted to help but he didn’t know how. Prince
Siddhartha went on a long journey. He wanted to find out
why there was unhappiness in the world.

He spent many years doing many religious practices such
as praying, meditation and fasting until he finally
understood the basic truths of life.

5. How did Buddhism begin?
At the age of 35 Siddhartha was determined to complete
his spiritual quest, so he meditated under a sacred fig tree
(also known as the Bodhi tree) in a town in India and
promised not to rise before enlightenment.
He gained enlightenment, or nirvana, and was given the
title of Buddha, which means Enlightened One.

6. The Three Universal Truths
1. Everything in life is impermanent and
always changing.
2. Because nothing is permanent, a life
based on possessing things or persons
doesn't make you happy.
3. There is no eternal, unchanging soul and
"self" is just a collection of changing
characteristics.

7. The Five Precepts
Buddhists follow a set of rules called the Five
Precepts. They are:
1. Not to kill or harm living things
2. Not to take things that are not freely given
3. Not to have wrong relationships
4. Not to tell lies or speak unkindly
5. Not to drink alcohol or take drugs

This map displays Buddhism across the world. It is an extremely popular religion in the
Asian continent. It is here where most of the monasteries, that monks dedicate their
lives to, are based on. With an estimated 360 million followers, it is the 4th largest
religion.

Meditation
Meditation means focusing the mind to
achieve an inner stillness that leads to a
state of enlightenment. Meditation takes
many forms.
