Changes to the furlough scheme from 1 July
1. Key changes to the
Coronavirus Job
Retention Scheme
from 1 July

The COVID-19 crisis is rapidly evolving and the government's response and the details of support on offer are continuously
changing. We'll be updating our posts regularly to ensure our analysis and advice remains as accurate and useful as possible.
2. 1
To qualify for a flexible furlough claim,
employees must have been furloughed
previously, for a minimum of 21 consecutive
days, between 1 March and 30 June 2020.
3. 2
You can only claim for the highest
number of employees that were in any
one claim before 30 June 2020.
4. A new agreement must be issued to
employees that are part of the flexible
furlough scheme. They can be brought
back to work for any amount of time and
in any pattern, and employers can still
claim for the hours not worked.

5. 4
Employers can’t ask employees to do any
work that makes money or provides
services for the employer organisation
during the hours the employee is
furloughed.
6. 5 Claims must start and end within the same
calendar month and claim periods can’t be
shorter than a week. Any claim which runs
across June and July must be split into two, to
cover the June days and the July days of the
furlough period.
7. 6Employees can work and be furloughed in the same
pay period. For this, the employer will need to work
out the employee’s usual hours, the actual hours
they work, and their furloughed hours for each
claim period.
There are two different calculations an employer
can use to work out usual hours depending on
whether they normally work fixed or variable hours.
