I. Introduction
When asked about gay rights, I always have the same response to it. They are their
own person and they should decide all the major decisions in their life. Just because they are
homosexuals their rights should not be taken away. If we do that, then we should just start
taking rights from different religions and races. Everyone in this planet is different. In America
we have the choice of being free and deciding everything for ourselves. We do not need others
to decide for us and take our rights away because we are different. Being gay does nothing to
our society. What else do they do? Do gay do any damage to us? We are contradicting what
our country is known for… FREEDOM. We get to choose what religion we prefer to be. Then
we should be able to choose the orientation of our choice.
II. Background Information:
What do you think of same sex relationships? Everyone has their own opinions towards
that subject. Do homosexuals have the same rights as heterosexual couples? Homosexuality
has been going on for years now, it has not just started. In the past, before 2003, gay marriage
was not legal in the United States. After 2003 it became legal in two states which are
Massachusetts and Connecticut. Other than those two states, no states in America legalize gay
marriage. Gay marriage is recognized on the state level only. People who are against
homosexual marriage in the United States have gone back to the Constitution to define marriage
as a union between a man and a woman. Currently, in the United States we do not have the
entire country’s support on gay marriage. They only have marriage rights in two states. Maybe in
the future more states will support homosexuality.

III. Foundations of American Government
The American government should not get involved in gay marriage. A marriage is
between two people, not a couple and the government. It is a person’s choice whom they want
to marry. Homosexuals must not have to move to another state just to get married. If it is going
to happen in another state, why not allow it. Shouldn’t the whole country agree as one? We
shouldn’t have scattered opinions across the US. This problem should be agreed upon by the
entire country not just the states. It should be legalized. There is no problem with gay marriage,
what is the big deal the government finds with it. If they are worried about the image of America
then we should worry more about violence at school or war. Marriage between people of the
same sex does not contradict any of the Bill of Rights. If here in the United State we the people
have the freedom of religion, and everyone decides whatever religion they would practice, then
why can’t a person choose whom they want to marry, even if they are the same sex. We are free
here, everyone should have the same rights, gay or not. We the people have the right so if we
want gay marriage then we should speak our minds and try to change the government’s idea
towards gay marriage. If we want something done then we should take action. Americans have
been trying to change the government’s mind on gay marriage, so we have to give the gay
community points for doing so. That is the only way for the United States of America to accept
gay marriage in every state. A step has been taken by allowing two states to encourage gay
marriage. We are all equal. It seems like every time we get over discriminating a certain type of
people we move on to another type and the cycle continues here in America even though we all
have the same rights.

IV. Political Behavior
All American citizens have the right to vote for what we believe in so why can’t we vote
for gay marriages to be legalized? We vote for who we think can help our country the most so
since we are supposed to be a free country then why can our citizens that pay their taxes and
work hard here in America be with the person and sex that they choose? Who has the right to
deprive them of that? In our government it states that we have the right to life liberty and the
pursuit of happiness but that is not totally true in my opinion. If a man or a woman are in love
with a same sex individual and the law is stopping them from legally being with that person,
than isn’t that really taking that right away from? You can’t be happy if the government is
telling you that you cannot be with your soul mate? Another subject that is talked about in unit
2 is mass media and public opinion. When the government talks about “the people” then they
are referring to public opinion. Many people get in large groups and state their public opinions
on wanting gay marriage to be legalized. So why does the government ignore these people?
All over the media everyday you can see gay relationships being portrayed. If they can portray
that in the media, why not in real life? Who is it hurting to let these people have the same
rights as everyone else?
V. Media and public opinion
Public opinion does not approve of same sex marriages, because of the fact marriage
should be defined as only consisting of a union of one man and one woman. That is what most
of America thinks about when they hear same sex marriage. Generally as we speak more and
more people are becoming open minded, so over the past couple of years the people who
opposed has decreased. But the numbers are still not big enough to win over a state. In my

own experience I use to dislike gay people as well, but it changed last year when I joined
tennis and there was this gay Asian guy who was in the class. At first I didn’t like him, but once
I got to know him I thought he was a really funny guy. So that changed my opinion to same sex
couples. So I ask a couple of friends should marriage be defined as a man and woman coming
together as a union. Three out of five people said that a man and woman together, as for the
others, one person said when two people come together, the last result ended up being
undecided. So the results are that most people like the idea of a man and woman coming
together in a union. That was my public opinion poll for same sex couples, it could change
though, because more people in America are becoming more open minded.
VI. Legislative Branch
In congress they have acted on this subject of same-sex couples, they have been involved
since 2003. Rep. Eugene O’Flaherty co-chairman of the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee said
“I think that as a Legislature it’s our duty to find compromises on troublesome and vexing public
policy issues.” He is just hopeful that there can be a point where we have a bill or proposal in
front of our colleagues that can be agreed upon by a majority.” All the rep. of legislative branch
is trying to help the people so it does not make a big scene. The legislative branch is so
arrogant they always look back at the constitutional amendment that would legally define
marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Senate President Robert Travaglini
chairman of the legislative said that he was committed to bringing civil union legislation to the
floor for a vote. In 2003 in Massachusetts they had a vote between the citizens, if the majority
voted same-sex rights then it would be legal, if not then they would be denied those rights. They

are the only state to given rights to those who are same-sex couple, and now it is
Massachusetts and Connecticut. They are the only state that gives rights to same-sex couples
to get married. This is a specific type of freedom. We should be free to do anything. We have
overcome many obstacles in being happy. Constitutions allowed to end slavery and for women
to have the right to vote, these things to allow people to be happy and superior. Then why won’t
the Constitution include gay marriages. Homosexuality has been going on for years.

VII. Conclusion
After all, our government should not have a say in anyone’s marriage. It does not matter
whether an individual is a homosexual or not. The gay community has just as many rights as
any other American. America is supposed to be the “land of the free” so why not let these people
be free? If homosexuals can vote, pay taxes, buy a house, or join the army then why can’t they
marry the person of their choosing? If this is such a big issue, why not just take all of their rights
away? Cruel and unusual punishment is not allowed. Homosexuals are not breaking the law
because they are gay; all they want is peace and love from their citizens. They want to be
accepted and not be discriminated for being different. Is that so hard?
