• Race: Biological features: skin colour, skin tone...
• Ethnicity: Not just about race. It’s about cultural
identity: tradition, customs, dress food, religion, faith
• Nationality: refers to where you were born
• Saying someone is white doesn’t describe their
ethnicity

She said that all stereotypes have a bit of truth about
them which makes them plausible.
For example, she said that most terrorists are Muslim but, not
all Muslims are terrorists.
A stereotype is normally viewed negatively.
Positive representations are called corrective stereotypes
which is where new ideas are created about a previous
group to change our view about them.
10. Ethnic Stereotypes in the Media
• Alvarado’s (1987) stereotypes in the
representation of ethnicity and race:
• EXOTIC
• DANGEROUS
• PITIED
• HUMOUROUS
• And a recent revision of this has added the
SEXUALISED stereotype
11. TV Drama
• Groups from particular ethnicities have storylines
that centre around their culture
• Can you think of any examples???
E.g.
• Indian characters clash with British culture &
their traditional culture e.g. Arranged marriages
• They rarely have storylines that don’t have
anything to do with their ethnicity
• Unfortunately this is usually negative.
