Global warming
1.
2.
3. WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?
Global warming is the rise in the average
temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans
since the late 19th century primarily caused by
increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases
produced by human activities such as the
burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.
4. EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
1) Melting of Ice Worldwide : especially at the Earth’s poles.
This includes mountain glaciers, ice sheets covering West
Antarctica, Greenland and the Himalayas.
It leads to rise in level of water (Sea level has already risen by
4 to 8 inches in the past century, and the pace of sea level
rise appears to be accelerating.) which causes destruction of
land and life. For ex:- Floods, storms. etc
6. 2) Change in Ecosystem : Some species will move farther north
or become more successful; others won’t be able to move and
could become extinct. Wildlife research scientist Martyn
Obbard has found that since the mid-1980s, with less ice on
which to live and fish for food, polar bears have gotten
considerably skinnier. Polar bear biologist Ian Stirling has
found a similar pattern in Hudson Bay. He fears that if sea
ice disappears, the polar bears will as well.
8. 3) Health related problems : Global warming could increase smog
pollution in some areas and intensify pollen allergies and
asthma. Hotter conditions could also aggravate local air
quality problems, already afflicting more than 100 million
people. Warming temperatures, alternating periods of drought
and deluges, and ecosystem disruption have contributed to
more widespread outbreaks of infections like malaria, dengue
fever, tick-borne encephalitis, and diarrheal illnesses. People
living in poverty will be hardest hit by the global surge in
infectious diseases.
10. CAUSE OF GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is primarily a problem of too much carbon dioxide
(CO2) in the atmosphere—which acts as a blanket, trapping
heat and warming the planet. As we burn fossil fuels like coal, oil
and natural gas for energy or cut down and burn forests to
create pastures and plantations, carbon accumulates and
overloads our atmosphere. Certain waste management and
agricultural practices aggravate the problem by releasing other
potent global warming gases, such as methane and nitrous
oxide. See the pie chart for a breakdown of heat-trapping global
warmingemissions by economic sector.

12. Preventive methods towards
global warming
We have to understand and accept the fact that
emission of carbon and Green House Gasses
cannot be stopped completely and as we move
ahead it’s only going to increase. We have to find a
solution that not only solves the bigger problem
but also goes hand in hand with the economic
growth. So,
13. • We can also stop burning plastics, stop chopping trees and stop
excess industries. Adopt 3 ‘R’ plan (Reuse, Recycle, Reduce).
Use smart vehicles and public transport. What we need to do is
to make the government to enforce few rules.
• The government has to pass a rule like this “If a factory is
producing 100 tonne of carbon dioxide each year, they have to
offset this pollution by investing in a green project or buying
carbon credits equivalent to 100 tonne of carbon-di- oxide”.
14. FACTS!!!
About 1000 tons/second CO2 is dumped into the air—2011 sets
the record.
CO2 level is Highest in 650,000 years. 11% increase till 1950, now
40%.
Between the years 1961 and 1997, the world’s glaciers lost 890 cubic
miles of ice.
In 1910, Glacier National Park in Montana boasted 150 glaciers—
today there are just 27.
The last two decades of the twentieth century were the hottest
decades in more than 400 years and may have been the hottest
decades for several thousand years.
