The document describes the key female reproductive organs and their functions, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina. It explains ovulation, fertilization, and the roles of the hormones estrogen, progesterone, LH, and FSH. Additionally, it provides a quiz to test knowledge of whether structures are part of the male, female, or both reproductive systems.
4. Sexual
Reproduction Females
Cervix: a ring of muscular tissue
at the junction of the Vagina and
the Uterus to protect the uterus
from disease.
Fallopian Tubes: The tubes that
carry the ovum to the uterus.
Generally the site of fertilization
of ovum.
Fimbriae: The structure that
"catches" or guides the ovum into
the fallopian tube.
5. Sexual
Reproduction Females
Hymen: A protective tissue that
closes off the vagina to the
outside environment.
Labia majora: Large lips. Protective
tissues that cover the vagina.
Labia minora: Minor lips
Ovulation: Release of ovum from
ovary.
6. Sexual
Reproduction Females
Ovum : The egg that is released
during ovulation, and if the egg is
fertilized pregnancy results.
Ovary: The organ that stores the
female eggs.
Uterus: The organ that houses
the embryo after egg
fertilization.
Vulva: The external parts of the
vagina.
7. SEX HORMONES IN HUMANS.
Oestrogen :
Influences growth of the reproductive organs, breasts, and
secondary sex characteristics, such as fat distribution,
voice pitch, broad pelvis and hair pattern.
Progesterone :
Acts on the uterus lining preparing it for pregnancy.
If fertilization occurs the corpus luteum persists to
produce this hormone.
If fertilization does not occur the ovum and the corpus
luteum break down.
This leads to low levels of the hormone in the blood and
menstruation follows.
8. SEX HORMONES IN HUMANS.
Luteinising Hormone (LH) :
Pituitary hormone that causes a follicle to rupture
and then become the corps luteum.
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) :
hormone produced by the pituitary gland, that
stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles and the
ripening of an ovum.
