Reproduction
Learning Goals:

To be able to explain Asexual Reproduction
To be able to explain Sexual Reproduction
To be able to give advantages and
disadvantages for each
Why does reproduction
exist?
What is reproduction?
Reproduction is the production of new members of a
species, replacing those who die due to old age, disease,
competition etc.
It is divided into two main types:
Sexual reproduction
involves two parents who
have sex organs which
produce sex cells.

Asexual reproduction involves
one parent and no sex cells
Asexual Reproduction
Offspring arise from a single parent
Offspring are identical in
every way to their
parent: clones

Mitosis is means by which
these clones are
produced.
Mitosis
A type of cell division that results
in two daughter cells each the
same as the parent cell

The DNA of the daughter
cells is identical as all the
DNA comes from one
parent
Types of Asexual
Reproduction
Fission: simple cell splitting. (this
can happen for single cells or
clusters of cells)
Bacteria Cell Division

Budding: the offspring which
separates is smaller that the
parent (e.g. yeast or potatoes)
Types of Asexual
Reproduction
Vegetative propagation: the formation of miniaturised
plant from specialised leaves or runners

Strawberry
Plants
Asexual Reproduction:
Pros and Cons
The offspring already adapted for
their environment
There is no need to find a mate, which
takes extra energy
A very fast way of reproduction: can
be good and bad (overpopulation)

All offspring are clones: if one get sick,
they all get sick
Sexual reproduction
Offspring arise from a two parents
Offspring are a combination of the
DNA of both parents sex cells
(gametes)

Meiosis is means by which these
gametes are produced.
Meiosis
A type of cell division that results in
half the required DNA for a new
organism

In most cases, male gametes are known
as sperm, and female gametes are
known as eggs
The offspring is a combination of
traits from the male and female parent
Sexual Reproduction:
Pros and Cons
The offspring's DNA is different: is
prepared for any changes.
Any disease that affects some of the
offspring will not affect all of them

This variation in DNA leads to evolution
Takes time and energy to find a mate
