Summary of key findings for parents
This provision is good
 The management team is passionate about their roles and demonstrates a very good
understanding of the pre-school's strengths and areas for development to drive ongoing
improvement.
 Children make good progress in their learning. Staff know children well and have a
good understanding of their individual learning styles. Planning of the environment is
highly effective and takes account of children's individual interests and next steps in
learning. Children confidently select from a very good range of resources.
 Staff's care for children is exceptional. Staff form warm and trusting relationships with
children. These strong emotional attachments have a positive impact on the way
children grow in confidence and develop their independence.
 Parents feel involved in their children's learning. For example, staff regularly share ideas
and information to help parents support their children's learning at home. Parents are
invited to attend stay-and-play sessions, where children share with their parents the
many activities on offer.
It is not yet outstanding because:
 At times, staff do not use their good teaching skills to further challenge children to
extend their chosen play and learning.
 Sometimes, staff do not consistently plan to extend children's sensory experiences,
particularly for those that prefer to play outdoors.
Inspection report: Little Bookham & Effingham Preschool, 11 October 2017 2 of 5
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
 support staff to be more consistent in using their good teaching skills to extend
children's chosen play and learning even further
 build on children's sensory experiences, particularly for those who prefer to learn
outdoors.
Inspection activities
 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors.
 The inspector sampled documentation, including staff suitability and training, children's
development records, risk assessments and self-evaluation.
 The inspector discussed self-evaluation with management.
 The inspector spoke to staff about their knowledge of safeguarding, child protection
and first aid.
 The inspector spoke to staff, parents and children and took into account their views.

Inspection report: Little Bookham & Effingham Preschool, 11 October 2017 3 of 5
Inspection findings
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. Management ensures all staff have a thorough understanding of
what to do if they are concerned about the welfare of a child. Management monitors the
quality of teaching and children's progress regularly. They frequently meet with staff and
provide effective individual meetings. For instance, staff attend a range of training
opportunities to help build their knowledge and teaching skills. Recent training enabled
staff to focus on developing young children's independence and self-help skills. This helps
to improve outcomes for all children. Management has established effective systems for
monitoring different groups of children and uses this information well. For example, they
have explored further ways to support two year olds in the pre-school environment.
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Staff provide an exciting range of activities that supports children in their ongoing learning
and development. For example, in the pretend play farm shop children use real fruit and
vegetables and herbs and spices as they sell and share food with their friends. Staff
engage in children's play and encourage their communication and language skills well. For
example, they ask children questions about their play and give them time to answer, to
support their speaking and thinking skills well. Staff teach children mathematical skills as
they play, such as by introducing a range of natural objects for children to count, sort and
compare. Children are inquisitive as they play with and explore dough. They roll, knead,
squeeze and stretch it and staff talk to them about the textures and different shapes
forming.
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding
Children demonstrate an excellent understanding of the high expectations that staff put in
place to enhance their awareness of positive behaviour. Children show extremely high
levels of independence and confidence. For example, on arrival they confidently and
quickly choose what they would like to do, self-select fruit at snack time and
enthusiastically help tidy away. Children learn about the world around them, for example,
by exploring woodlands and looking at local wildlife, plants and the changing seasons.
Support for children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities is exceptional.
Staff work extremely closely with a number of early years professionals and timely
interventions support all children to achieve their potential.
Outcomes for children are good
Children of all ages and abilities make good progress in relation to their individual starting
points. Children show impressive skills when singing and dancing to music. They develop
good early writing skills. For example, young children make marks using a very good
range of creative and sensory media. Older children identify and write the letters in their
name and make labels and lists of produce when playing in the farm shop. Children are
well prepared for their next stage of learning and eventual move to school.

  • 3. Inspection report: Little Bookham & Effingham Preschool, 11 October 2017 3 of 5 Inspection findings Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good Safeguarding is effective. Management ensures all staff have a thorough understanding of what to do if they are concerned about the welfare of a child. Management monitors the quality of teaching and children's progress regularly. They frequently meet with staff and provide effective individual meetings. For instance, staff attend a range of training opportunities to help build their knowledge and teaching skills. Recent training enabled staff to focus on developing young children's independence and self-help skills. This helps to improve outcomes for all children. Management has established effective systems for monitoring different groups of children and uses this information well. For example, they have explored further ways to support two year olds in the pre-school environment. Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good Staff provide an exciting range of activities that supports children in their ongoing learning and development. For example, in the pretend play farm shop children use real fruit and vegetables and herbs and spices as they sell and share food with their friends. Staff engage in children's play and encourage their communication and language skills well. For example, they ask children questions about their play and give them time to answer, to support their speaking and thinking skills well. Staff teach children mathematical skills as they play, such as by introducing a range of natural objects for children to count, sort and compare. Children are inquisitive as they play with and explore dough. They roll, knead, squeeze and stretch it and staff talk to them about the textures and different shapes forming. Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding Children demonstrate an excellent understanding of the high expectations that staff put in place to enhance their awareness of positive behaviour. Children show extremely high levels of independence and confidence. For example, on arrival they confidently and quickly choose what they would like to do, self-select fruit at snack time and enthusiastically help tidy away. Children learn about the world around them, for example, by exploring woodlands and looking at local wildlife, plants and the changing seasons. Support for children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities is exceptional. Staff work extremely closely with a number of early years professionals and timely interventions support all children to achieve their potential. Outcomes for children are good Children of all ages and abilities make good progress in relation to their individual starting points. Children show impressive skills when singing and dancing to music. They develop good early writing skills. For example, young children make marks using a very good range of creative and sensory media. Older children identify and write the letters in their name and make labels and lists of produce when playing in the farm shop. Children are well prepared for their next stage of learning and eventual move to school.
