A group of American tourists arrived in Italy not long ago.

mine: “You have pizza here too.”
A group of Japanese Boy Scouts landed in Chicago.
“Amazing!” they told their troop leader: “They have
McDonald’s here too!”
10. Globalization is not a phenomenon. It is not just some
passing trend. Today it is an overarching international
system shaping the domestic politics and foreign
relations of virtually every country, and we need to
understand it as such.
--Thomas Friedman
11. Manfred Steger
Does globalization create sameness or difference?
What is the role of the Media?
Globalization of Languages
Does Globalization create sameness or difference?
Pessimistic hyperglobalizers
Optimistic hyperglobalizers
Some disagree with both sides and claim that there is
“glocalization”
A complex interaction of the global and local characterized
by cultural borrowing
12. The role of Media
A small number of TNCs control almost all the
world’s communication industries.
Yahoo, Google, AOL/Time Warner, Microsoft, Viacom,
GE, Disney, and News Corporation account for two-
thirds of world’s communication revenue.
Profit-making, entertainment, and production of
news are intertwined.
This doesn’t only cause cultural imperialism
(undisputed cultural hegemony of popular culture),
but also leads to depoliticization of social reality and
the weakening of civic bonds.
14. Comments and Tips for your Data
Analysis and Results
Give your readers a road-map: It is important to tell the readers at the
beginning how you organized your data and what you will discuss
specifically in this section.
The way you organize your result/discussion section will determine
how you illustrate your data. For example,
If you organized by themes (show examples…)
If you organized by cases (show examples…)
If you organized by data sources. If this is your organization, then you also
need to have either themes or cases within each data source (show
examples)

Analysis/Results
All direct quotations from interviews and survey should be block
indented if an only if the excerpt is 40 OR MORE WORDS;
In the above case, there is no need for you to use quotation marks
since your Block Indent serves as quotation marks;
If they are fewer than 40 words, include them in text using quotation
marks and also italicize them;
Do not overuse direct quotations
Make sure to include your interview questions and survey tool

16. General Comments about your Data
Analysis/Results (continued…)
When you use a direct excerpt from the survey or interviews, please
discuss what the excerpt means for you. In other words, you need to
include your interpretations. It is unacceptable to just list the excerpts
and not say anything about them;
You need to “discuss” or “interpret” your results in your own words
and not just by the use of quotations.

The article argues that there is nothing American about boats crushing icebergs, or heroes saving the world. The second point: Some Americans think that Hollywood in a way harms the morals and tastes of Americans. Three distinct questions. Is Hollywood as powerful as its enemies imagine? Is there an identifiable thing you can sensibly label "American culture"? And does America's domination extend to every corner of the popular arts and entertainment? ] What is the reaction? Can Iranian mullahs or French education ministry do anything about this? NO, says Steger, American popular culture seems to be unstoppable. They create an “ethos of infantilization” similar to the critique of the consumerist culture and the entertainment industry. Gobalcosumerism becomes increasingly soulless and unethical in its pursuit of profit. Moreover, McDonaldization leads to serious health problems: Juvenile obesity, diabetes, cancer, etc. 2) Others argue that it is good to have this homogenization, because it is related to democracy and human rights. Even non-chauvanists might celebrate the intensification of internet or the creation of a techno-culture3) Cultural globalization always takes place in local contexts.
