Heart problems may occur any time and may affect people of all age
groups. Some heart problems are inherited while others are
developed. Coronary heart disease refers to the failure of blood to
reach the heart and surrounding tissue. Cardiomyopathy is the heart
muscle disease. It refers to the malfunction of the heart muscle called
the ‘myocardium’. There can also be cardio vascular disease
particularly affects the veins and arteries supplying blood to the heart.
Ischaemic heart disease is the decreased flow of blood to the heart
and its surrounding tissues. Heart failure can result from the inability
of the heart to supply enough blood to the rest of the body. This leads
to death. Hypertensive heart disease is caused by high blood
pressure. Inflammatory heart disease is caused due to the
inflammation of the heart muscle. Valvular heart disease affects the
valves of the heart.

Murmur is the sound that the heart produces due to the noise the
blood makes as it flows through. Most murmurs cannot be heard
unless a stethoscope is used. Heart murmur may be the result of
many different problems. Narrowing or leaking of valves is one such

2. Murmurs can be systolic kind or diastolic kind, depending on the
timings. According to the intensity of the heart murmur over time,
they can be classified as crescendo or decrescendo. There are six
places on the anterior side of the chest where heart murmurs can be
heard. The cardiologist will also check the radiation of the murmur.
Radiation refers to the direction of the blood flow. He will also check
the intensity of the murmur which refers to the intensity of sound on
a particular scale. The pitch and quality of the murmur is also
evaluated.
Murmur sounds may change due to certain factors. These include
abrupt standing, squatting, hand grip, positioning of the patient, etc.

Cardiomyopathy is one of those heart dysfunctions that are dangerous
to the person affected by it. There can be two types of
cardiomyopathy. The two types are intrinsic and extrinsic. Extrinsic
cardiomyopathy occurs outside the myocardium. Intrinsic
cardiomyopathy occurs inside the myocardium. Most of these heart
dysfunctions are extrinsic and the most common one is ‘Ischemia’.
Intrinsic cardiomyopathy is the weakness of the heart muscle and is
not due to any identifiable external cause. Alcoholism can cause
dilated cardiomyopathy.

Chest pain is the most common symptom. Manifestations of
underlying disease may occur. ECG abnormalities are easily detected.
Flat or inverted T rays are the most common. An echocardiogram can
easily detect wall motion abnormalities. Chest radiograms may be

What are the types of cardiomyopathy?
• Dilated cardiomyopathy- The heart becomes weak and large and
cannot pump enough blood.
• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy- The heart muscle becomes thick
and it is harder for blood to leave the heart.
• Ischemic cardiomyopathy- The arteries that supply the heart
with blood become narrow.
• Restrictive cardiomyopathy- The heart chambers are unable to
fill with enough blood because the heart muscle is stiff.
• Peripartum cardiomyopathy- This occurs during pregnancy or in
the next five months.
What are the causes of cardiomyopathy?
• The excess use of alcohol and cocaine
• Chemotherapy drugs
• End-stage kidney disease.
• High blood pressure
• Infections due to viruses like HIV
• Nutritional deficiencies like those of calcium and thiamine
• Pregnancy
• Genetic defects
• Coronary artery disease.

Treatment depends on the type of cardiomyopathy you have. It
definitely includes medication. Pacemakers may be implanted.

4. Treatment offers heart symptom (In French insuffisance
cardiaque ) relief until the patient can have a heart transplant.
Stem cell therapy is also commercially available but is not yet
supported by enough evidence. Due to the fact that this is a severe
problem, the patient may be required to be on chemicals and drugs
for the rest of his life.
