Tutoring System Saturday Program2010-I
What is regular tutoring in the SP? Support Unit A twenty-minute session of instruction to a student with learning difficulties. An opportunity for students to learn about strategies and tools to overcome learning difficulties. An opportunity for students to develop learning autonomy.
What is Special Tutoring in the SP? A fourteen-hour course the tutor will provide a student who has failed the same course twice. Not a regular course. Exploration of the reasons why Ss has failed the course and planning of course of action. Based on training of autonomous learning and study habits to finally overcome his learning difficulties. Evaluated with the final exam of the course and a final oral grade based on the student performance in that area throughout all the sessions. Reported on a special format we have designed.
What teachers should do before sending a students to tutoring Recommend visiting the AVM lab. Suggest WebPages  and software to work on their weaknesses. Encourage the student to go to the Media Conversation Club. Show the student how to prepare his lessons in advance to perform better in class. Likewise, encourage students to review previous lessons. Call parents, let them know about their child’s performance and suggest better study habits. Guide students to design their own action plan taking into account your feedback.
When to send a student to tutoring When despite having tried the recommendations above, the student keeps having problems understanding and using language patterns, and meeting the objectives for the class written or oral performance. When s/he shows serious learning gaps at the beginning of the course.
When NOT to send a student to tutoring When the student has failed the quiz showing little review, preparation and autonomous work. When the student shows lack of responsibility, conscientious work and punctuality handing in writing assignments. When the student shows reluctance to follow your advice. When the student has missed class.
What should tutors do in a tutoring session? Identify the student’s problem concerning language and learning habits (5 mins) Give a brief explanation of the topic, showing the student where and how he can find explanations or possible solutions to his problems. Train him on the correct use of the resources he has: Book, workbook, dictionary, Cds, etc. Assign additional practice online.
What resources can tutors use? Regular Google search Grammar books available in the resource library. Software available in the AVM lab Bank of online tools the program will compile soon.
What type of feedback should tutors write on the tutoring slip? If the student arrived more than 5 minutes late, please mention that. Specify what topic (s) you covered. If there was something you couldn’t do, please mention it and say if you consider the student needs another session. Likewise, mention the Ss’ understanding you could perceive from the tutee. If you think the student ended up showing little understanding of the topics despite your work, please specify. Describe the activity (ies) by means of which you worked the target areas or topics. Basically, mention strategies used and instructed on, material or web tools, etc. Mention the follow up work you asked the student to do both at home and in class. That way, T’s will have some information to do a follow up with the tutee.
