Velscope Our velscope examination is an intraoral cancer screening that is routine care in our office. Oral cancer has a 60% survival rate over the course of 5 years
Velscope The light looks underneath the skin and checks for any areas that look abnormal
Velscope intraoral cancer screening Oral cancer is on the rise in 18-40 year olds because of the HPV Visual cancer screening is performed at each routine cleaning visit
Visilite Oral Cancer Screening Oral Cancer THE DEADLY STATISTICS Every hour of every day, one American dies of oral cancer. The mortality rate associated with oral cancer has not improved significantly in the last 40 years. The death rate in the United States for oral cancer is higher than that of cervical cancer, Hodgkin's disease, cancer of the brain, liver, testes, kidney, or ovary. More than 30,000 Americans will receive an oral cancer diagnosis this year. In five years, only 57% will still be alive. 25% of oral cancer victims do not use tobacco or alcohol and have no other lifestyle risk factors.
New Cavity Detection Cardiologists do not wait for heart attacks Acid levels will demineralize the teeth and that is when decay can happen .
Checking resting pH of the mouth can determine how at risk you are for cavities
Why check the pH of the saliva? Saliva protects teeth by: Neutralizing acid challenges; flushing food and bacteria from the oral cavity; acting as a lubricant; forming pellicle on the tooth surface and delivering calcium, phosphate and fluoride to the tooth surface. Carbohydrates and acidic foods amplify mutans streptococcus in dental plaque (particularly streptococcus mutans and streptococcus sobrinus) which are related to both the initiation and progression of dental caries. Once saliva problems are identified, the practitioner can recommend a course of preventive care which includes introducing supplements (like fluoride, CPP-ACP, chlorhexidine), lifestyle changes (increase water intake, decrease diuretic intake - caffeine, alcohol, etc.), increase saliva stimulation (chewing gum and low acid foods), altering oral hygiene regimen (increase brushing and cleaning, improve cleaning and flossing methods). Simple test to see how acidic your saliva is to combat an acid challenge
Checking the level of StrepMutans will help in the treatment of cavities before they happen
Who should be tested? New patients – particularly children and the elderly Patients with lower natural oral protection because of low salivary flow Patients with an acidic diet, low oral pH or high frequency of fermentable carbohydrates Patients undergoing periodontal treatment due to higher risk of root surface caries Patients before extensive restorative treatment to avoid recurrence of cavitations Expecting parents or guardians, to prevent transmission A 15 minute test is all it takes. One minute of chewing on gum followed by a collection of saliva will determine how at risk you are for cavities and what we can do to prevent them.
Cavities are problems in Orthodontics What do braces or Invisalignhave to do with cavities? Braces or orthodontic appliances are a great way to straighten teeth, but can put you at risk for decay.   Braces create many areas that harbor plaque bacteria and make teeth much harder to adequately clean. The acids produced by these bacteria can not only cause decay, but in the absence of cavities can still cause unsightly "white spot lesions" or areas of demineralized enamel surrounding the brackets.  This means that while your teeth many be straight when you finish braces, they may be irreparably discolored when the brackets are removed. Expert Advice If possible, seek a dentist and/or orthodontist who can identify your risk for the infection that causes cavities prior to seeking orthodontic treatment. Discuss your risk for caries with your dentist and/or orthodontist. Use an electric toothbrush like Sonicare, Ultreo, or Braun while in braces to aid in cleaning. Use a floss threader or SuperFloss to adequately remove bacteria between teeth and around brackets. Use alkaline pH, fluoride, and xylitolproducts to decrease the damage that may be caused by bacteria while in braces. For more information on caring for your teeth while in braces see recommendations by the American Association of Orthodontics
Xylitol How does xylitol prevent cavities? Xylitol is a 5-carbon sugar that is commonly found in birch tree sap and naturally occurring in some fruits and vegetables.  Xylitol works to prevent cavities in a number of ways: Bacteria cannot break down xylitol into acid as they do from all other fermentable sugars (i.e. sucrose, glucose, fructose, dextrose, etc.). When bacteria intake xylitol, they don't intake as much other fermentable sugars, reducing acid production. Xylitol helps prevent the bacteria from adhering to the enamel, which prevents them from reproducing. Xylitol, used in conjunction with fluoride, can be more effective at repairing and remineralizing teeth than fluoride alone. Xylitol actually works to control the number of acid-producing bacteria in the mouth, which can in turn prevent cavities, and is available in many forms, from gums and mints to toothpastes and mouth rinses. Expert Advice Xylitol is usually measured in grams, and studies show the recommended therapeutic dose is 6-11 grams per day. Alkaline dental products that combine xylitol and fluoride may be more effective. If you ingest more than 25-30 grams in one day, you may have an upset stomach and/or diarrhea. Xylitol can be very harmful, even potentially fatal, to dogs, as they cannot metabolize it like people can.
Carifree Treatment Protocol Shifts the pH of your mouth for one month to raise it to neutral Available at our office or online Treatment Rinse Because you too can be cavity-free!   Treatment Rinse is great for Anyone who has cavities, or has had a cavity anytime recently Anyone determined to be at risk for decay, even if no cavities currently exist Those experiencing bad breath Improving the health of teeth and gums
Sealants aren’t just for kids anymore Glass Ionomer sealants will release fluoride into the tooth and other teeth by recharging Deep grooves in the teeth are too small for toothbrush bristles to clean out plaque acids.
MI Paste Teeth need calcium, phosphate and fluoride. Healthy saliva contains these minerals, and in conjunction with certain salivary proteins is able to deliver bio-available calcium and phosphate to the tooth surface during the demineralization/remineralization process. Calcium and phosphate are known to help: Strengthen tooth enamel Reduce sensitivity Buffer plaque acid MI Paste contains RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP). This technology has a unique ability to deliver bio-available calcium and phosphate when they are needed most. MI Paste binds calcium and phosphate to tooth surfaces, plaque and surrounding soft tissue. The RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP) technology releases the calcium and phosphate when a patient’s saliva is acid challenged by the normal digestive process. MI Paste IndicationsMI Paste is indicated for post-bleaching sensitivity, root planing and scaling, as well as during prophylaxis
MI Paste Plus with Fluoride Helps heal the white spots and deminieralized areas at the gumline. Ideal for post orthodontic white spot. We have a treatment protocol to help heal some of the spots
Non-surgical periodontal treatment is available in our office I NEED ARESTIN®? Three out of 4 American adults are affected by periodontal disease. Are you at risk for this infection? Answer the following questions Oral Health Self-exam Do you smoke? Is your diet low in important nutrients? Are you pregnant? Do you have diabetes or heart disease? Are you currently taking any medications such as heart medications, antidepressants, or        oral contraceptives? Do you grind or clench your teeth? Do any family members have gum disease? Do you have bad breath? Are your gums red and swollen? Do your gums bleed when brushing or flossing? Are your gums pulling away from your teeth or receding? Are you under a great deal of stress? Do you have teeth that appear to be loosening? Have you noticed a change in the way your teeth fit together? Have you recently lost any teeth? If you answered YES to 2 or more of these questions, you may be at risk for periodontal disease.
Arestin HOW IT WORKS Give your gums a fighting chance Even though scaling and root planing (SRP) removes a great deal of bacteria that cause periodontal infection, the instruments used during this mechanical procedure can't always reach the bacteria that hide in the bottom of pockets or in difficult-to-reach areas. That's why a dental healthcare team often decides to add a locally administered antibiotic (LAA) such as ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) Microspheres, 1 mg. Minocycline Microspheres make it different ARESTIN® uses Microsphere technology to easily and effectively kill the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. ARESTIN® is safe and easy for your dental professional to administer. ARESTIN® is a small amount of antibiotic powder that is placed inside infected periodontal pockets just after your dental professional finishes the SRP procedure. Once ARESTIN® is inserted, it immediately adheres to the periodontal pocket. Through a process called “polymer hydrolysis”, tiny holes in the Microspheres provide "escape routes" for the drug to be slowly released and absorbed into the surrounding gum tissue. This allows for a “sustained release” of the antibiotic, meaning ARESTIN® continues to work inside your gums for up to 21 days. Clinical studies show that ARESTIN® plus SRP is more effective at treating periodontal disease than SRP alone WHAT IT IS Although scaling and root planing (SRP) is effective at reducing plaque and some bacteria, it doesn't kill all of the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. SRP is a mechanical procedure and the instruments used to perform SRP cannot always reach the bacteria that reside at the bottom of deep or difficult-to-reach periodontal pockets. For these pockets, dental professionals often add a locally administered antibiotic (LAA) such as ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) Microspheres, 1mg to the SRP procedure. This comprehensive approach provides patients with two therapies that work simultaneously (ARESTIN® + SRP) to help kill the harmful bacteria that cause periodontal disease-so that the infection becomes more easily managed and won't immediately return. Infected areas in your gums Infected pockets inside your gums require treatment before periodontal disease causes further damage. ARESTIN® is indicated as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) procedures for reduction of pocket depth in patients with adult periodontitis. ARESTIN® may be used as part of a periodontal maintenance program which includes good oral hygiene, and SRP. Adding ARESTIN® ARESTIN® is a small amount of powder that is easily applied by a dental professional

Get your day’s worth of fruits and vegetables from one drink 20 fruits and vegetables Sodas, energy drinks and other "junk" foods are a hard temptation to pass up. Let’s face it, they are inexpensive and their availability is immense. Unfortunately, most people fail to recognize the damaging consequences that accompany this thrifty way of living. First, sodas have little, if any, nutritional value. Drinking them as a means for hydration is counterproductive. With the diuretic effects of caffeine, many soft-drinks actually dehydrate the body. The caffeine contained in most sodas and "energy" drinks (together with their artificial ingredients) present a broad range of health related problems. And while the energy boost that comes from these beverages is a welcome and often a seemingly useful bonus, this short-lived zest is typically followed by an uncomfortable crash, leaving drowsiness and fatigue. What about your diet sodas? Even non-caffeinated, diet sodas are bad for our health. Most artificial sweeteners used as a sugar-replacement in diet drinks breaks down into chemicals that can lead to a multitude of undesirable health effects. And you might not realize it, but the acidity level in most soft drinks is about the same as vinegar. Even moderate consumption of these drinks can create an unnatural, acidic environment in the body, leading to impaired digestion, acid reflux and heart burn. Despite all of this, these drinks still maintain a massive and growing prevalence in the world. Their convenience saves time, but at the cost of the consumer’s health. What about fruits and vegetables? Eating on-the-run makes it tough to consume the valuable fruits and vegetables that are essential to our bodies. And while it is much more convenient to eat prepackaged, instant meals (quick preparation time and less cleanup), we deprive ourselves of the daily minimum of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables that our bodies so desperately need. Introducing, Zoe Life. It is a great tasting, all-natural, powdered drink mix that is made up of 20 real fruits and vegetables. Zoé Life is sweetened with Stevia, an all-natural, herbal sweetener, containing no artificial chemicals. Stevia has many health benefits and has been used for centuries. One serving of Zoe Life contains only 1 gram of naturally occurring sugar, no caffeine or other stimulants, no chemical preservatives, no high-fructose corn syrup, no artificial colors, no cholesterol, no fat, no sodium, is gluten-free and only 25 calories. It can be mixed with water, juice, or your favorite yogurt or smoothie. Zoé Life is a healthy and inexpensive alternative to the "not so healthy" beverages we consume and is a great source of the nutrients your diet is lacking. Zoé Life is packed with pure antioxidants from whole food sources and is an outstanding way to begin each day. Your body will surely thank you Replace energy drink low acidity
