College of Home Science, Nirmala Niketan,
Mumbai, India
Study on Breakfast Habits of Indians
Supported by Kellogg India Private Limited
• A cross-sectional study was conducted in 4 metro cities - Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata
and Chennai.
• Sample size of 3600 subjects.
• Age groups of 8 to 40+ years.
• Survey within a SEC A and B sample population .
• Study conducted by Research Centre, College of Home Science, Nirmala Niketan,
Mumbai.
• Study supported by Kellogg India Private Limited.
• Study covered a variety of topics related to breakfast eating habits including key
perceptions/attitudes on breakfast and nutritional adequacy of breakfast and
day’s diet with respect to macro and micronutrient intakes.
‘India Breakfast Habits Study’
• Most of the consumers across cities perceive ‘breakfast’ as ‘something that is
eaten in the mornings’, ‘a light meal’, ‘a meal that gives you energy and keeps you
healthy’.
• Only 3% regard breakfast as essential.
• Lunch is considered to be the most important meal of the day.
• Overall only 40% of the subjects across all cities feel that breakfast is the most
important meal of the day driven by Delhi (51%). Importance for lunch increases
with age – impacting the importance given for dinner.
Breakfast - People in different cities view
breakfast differently
• Of the modern list of breakfast options, 75% and 73% perceive cereals to be good
breakfast options for kids and adults across cities.
• 85% of the subjects from Mumbai strongly feel that cereals are good as breakfast
for kids as compared to only 58% of subjects from Kolkata who feel the same.
• While milk and fruit combination is perceived as good for breakfast for kids in
Delhi (77%) and Mumbai (81%), only milk is perceived as good in Delhi (69%) and
Kolkata (60%).
Breakfast Perception – Different foods perceived
good for breakfast
• ‘Breakfast should be light’- 84% of all subjects, and ‘home cooked’ (91%) is
expressed by both genders across all age groups and cities.
• Fruits are perceived to add to the health quotient of breakfast by 79% of the
subjects.
• ‘A heavy breakfast makes me feel lethargic’- 61% of all subjects.
Breakfast Attitudes – People display varied
attitudes towards breakfast
• A key difference between breakfast skippers and eaters is related to beliefs about
skipping breakfast once in a while and eating breakfast whether you are hungry
or not.
• Both breakfast skippers and eaters associate breakfast with early morning food.
However more breakfast skippers (85% in Mumbai) feel that it is alright to skip
breakfast if they could manage until lunch time compared to breakfast eaters
(74% in Kolkata) who feel that breakfast should be eaten whether you are hungry
or not.
• This points to a stronger belief in consuming breakfast regularly by the breakfast
eaters.
Attitudes of Breakfast Skippers vs. Breakfast Eaters
The tendency to skip meals is seen in all age groups across all 4 cities
More than a quarter (27%) people claim not to have breakfast while only 9% claim
to skip lunch and as little as 5% claim to skip dinner. The figure below highlights this
trend.
Skipping of meals : across 4 cities
People claiming meal skipping
Breakfast skipping common in all 4 metros
• Around 60% of the subjects do not skip any meal – driven by Delhi where close
to 80% consumers don’t skip any meal.
• Amongst those who do, ‘breakfast’ is skipped the most, more so across Mumbai
(34%) and Chennai (37%).
Skipping of breakfast: across age groups
• More of adolescents (32%) skip breakfast as compared to children or
adults
People claiming meal skipping
While the above findings are for those who claim to skip breakfast, the survey tried
to determine how many subjects had actually missed breakfast on the day of the
survey.
9% of the subjects actually missed their breakfast on the day of the survey.
Reasons for Skipping Breakfast
• ‘Time’ is one of the biggest constraints (51%) for eating breakfast regularly (across
cities, gender and ages), more so in Kolkata (68%).
• ‘Not being hungry’ is one of the key reasons coming out from skippers in Mumbai
(40%).
People skipping breakfast on the day of the survey
The study also aimed to examine:
• The adequacy of intake of vital nutrients – energy, carbohydrates, proteins, fats,
calcium, iron, fibre, vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B3 and folic acid at breakfast
• The intake of these nutrients – energy, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, calcium,
iron, fibre, vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B3 and folic acid in the day’s diet
The findings of the survey not only highlight the varying trend of skipping breakfast
but also reveal a breakfast skewed towards low intakes of vital nutrients like
vitamins, minerals and fibre and high intakes of fat.
This report brings out the importance of a nutritionally balanced breakfast in light of
existing trends.
Nutritional Adequacy
People across all 4 cities having a nutritionally inadequate
breakfast
Energy content of breakfast
• 81% of subjects are consuming a nutritionally poor breakfast (less than 25% of
the day’s Recommended Dietary Allowance *RDA+ for energy).
• 72% of the subjects are not skipping breakfast, but having a breakfast that is
inadequate in calories.
Breakfast adequacy across age groups
• The trend for an inadequate breakfast rather than no breakfast is seen across age
groups.
• Breakfast picture is slightly better in children than in adults with less breakfast
skipping (2 % vs. 7% to 14%) and more breakfast adequacy (28% vs. 11% to 20%).
Nutritional Adequacy
People across all 4 cities having a nutritionally inadequate breakfast
Breakfast adequacy across gender
Across age groups there is a tendency for females to be having a
comparatively more inadequate breakfast (51% vs. 47% ).
Nutritional Adequacy
People across all 4 cities having a nutritionally inadequate breakfast
Breakfast intake of nutrients – are they adequate?
The breakfast for all the people studied is poor for all nutrients except
calcium. Calcium intake at 30% of the day’s RDA is high due to the consumption of milk
at breakfast.
There are gross inadequacies in the intakes of iron and fibre and most B group vitamins
in breakfast across all age groups.
Nutritional Adequacy
Gender and Age Wise Split – Women and Children default more at breakfast and
qualitative inadequacies in breakfast are seen across all age/ gender groups
Intakes of all other nutrients at breakfast except calcium (in children and adult males)
and protein (in children) is significantly lower than 25% of the RDA for most age/gender
groups.
Nutritional Adequacy
Nutritional Adequacy
Inadequacy at breakfast not being made up through
consumption of rest of the meals
• Across all age groups, deficits in the breakfast meal are not
being made up by the day’s diet for all nutrients. The daily diets
of people across all ages are found to be nutritionally inadequate
Findings after Gender and Age Split – Children having more inadequate day’s
nutrient intake profiles as compared to adults
• Across all age groups, deficits in the breakfast meal are not being made up
by the day’s diet for all nutrients
Mid-morning meal not making up for the nutrient deficit at breakfast
• Intake of nutrients at breakfast plus food consumed at mid-morning is also not
meeting 25% of the RDA for all nutrients, thereby highlighting the importance of
the first meal of the day.
Nutritional Adequacy
Breakfast eating habits and nutrient intakes vary across Mumbai,
Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai
• Breakfast skipping is seen more in Mumbai, followed by Delhi and Kolkata.
There is very little skipping in Chennai.
• 79%, 76% and 75% of the subjects in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata respectively are
having an inadequate breakfast as against 60% in Chennai.
Nutrient profile of breakfast and day’s diet
• While the nutrient profile of breakfast is the best in Chennai, the day’s
nutrient profile is found to be the best in Delhi.
Nutritional Adequacy
• 1 in 4 claim to skip breakfast. However among teens,
1 in 3 claim to skip breakfast.
• ‘No time’ and ‘not hungry’ cited as most common reasons. Is
hectic pace of life with late dinner to be blamed?
• A whopping 72% of all subjects are skimping or having a
nutritionally inadequate breakfast highlighting the lack of
awareness of the nutritional aspects of breakfast.
• Gender bias in breakfast. Greater breakfast inadequacy
among females than males more so in adolescents and
adults.
• Nutritional adequacy goes down with age. A definite cause of
concern since the younger generation looks up to adults as
role models.
Key findings of the ‘India Breakfast Habits Study’
• Amongst all 4 cities, the breakfast nutrient profile is
the best in Chennai. Is it because of the existence of well-
defined breakfast foods?
• More adolescent girls (18%) than boys (4%) are skipping
breakfast. This probably is linked to weight control issues.
• Nutritional inadequacy of the average breakfast meal. The
breakfast for all subjects is poor for all nutrients studied
except calcium.
• Nutrients missed at breakfast are not being compensated for
through the consumption of a mid-morning meal or through
other meals in the day, thereby highlighting utmost
importance of the first meal of the day.

  • 2. • A cross-sectional study was conducted in 4 metro cities - Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. • Sample size of 3600 subjects. • Age groups of 8 to 40+ years. • Survey within a SEC A and B sample population . • Study conducted by Research Centre, College of Home Science, Nirmala Niketan, Mumbai. • Study supported by Kellogg India Private Limited. • Study covered a variety of topics related to breakfast eating habits including key perceptions/attitudes on breakfast and nutritional adequacy of breakfast and day’s diet with respect to macro and micronutrient intakes. ‘India Breakfast Habits Study’
  • 3. • Most of the consumers across cities perceive ‘breakfast’ as ‘something that is eaten in the mornings’, ‘a light meal’, ‘a meal that gives you energy and keeps you healthy’. • Only 3% regard breakfast as essential. • Lunch is considered to be the most important meal of the day. • Overall only 40% of the subjects across all cities feel that breakfast is the most important meal of the day driven by Delhi (51%). Importance for lunch increases with age – impacting the importance given for dinner. Breakfast - People in different cities view breakfast differently
  • 4. • Of the modern list of breakfast options, 75% and 73% perceive cereals to be good breakfast options for kids and adults across cities. • 85% of the subjects from Mumbai strongly feel that cereals are good as breakfast for kids as compared to only 58% of subjects from Kolkata who feel the same. • While milk and fruit combination is perceived as good for breakfast for kids in Delhi (77%) and Mumbai (81%), only milk is perceived as good in Delhi (69%) and Kolkata (60%). Breakfast Perception – Different foods perceived good for breakfast
  • 5. • ‘Breakfast should be light’- 84% of all subjects, and ‘home cooked’ (91%) is expressed by both genders across all age groups and cities. • Fruits are perceived to add to the health quotient of breakfast by 79% of the subjects. • ‘A heavy breakfast makes me feel lethargic’- 61% of all subjects. Breakfast Attitudes – People display varied attitudes towards breakfast
  • 6. • A key difference between breakfast skippers and eaters is related to beliefs about skipping breakfast once in a while and eating breakfast whether you are hungry or not. • Both breakfast skippers and eaters associate breakfast with early morning food. However more breakfast skippers (85% in Mumbai) feel that it is alright to skip breakfast if they could manage until lunch time compared to breakfast eaters (74% in Kolkata) who feel that breakfast should be eaten whether you are hungry or not. • This points to a stronger belief in consuming breakfast regularly by the breakfast eaters. Attitudes of Breakfast Skippers vs. Breakfast Eaters
  • 7. The tendency to skip meals is seen in all age groups across all 4 cities More than a quarter (27%) people claim not to have breakfast while only 9% claim to skip lunch and as little as 5% claim to skip dinner. The figure below highlights this trend. Skipping of meals : across 4 cities People claiming meal skipping
  • 8. Breakfast skipping common in all 4 metros • Around 60% of the subjects do not skip any meal – driven by Delhi where close to 80% consumers don’t skip any meal. • Amongst those who do, ‘breakfast’ is skipped the most, more so across Mumbai (34%) and Chennai (37%). Skipping of breakfast: across age groups • More of adolescents (32%) skip breakfast as compared to children or adults People claiming meal skipping
  • 9. While the above findings are for those who claim to skip breakfast, the survey tried to determine how many subjects had actually missed breakfast on the day of the survey. 9% of the subjects actually missed their breakfast on the day of the survey. Reasons for Skipping Breakfast • ‘Time’ is one of the biggest constraints (51%) for eating breakfast regularly (across cities, gender and ages), more so in Kolkata (68%). • ‘Not being hungry’ is one of the key reasons coming out from skippers in Mumbai (40%). People skipping breakfast on the day of the survey
  • 10. The study also aimed to examine: • The adequacy of intake of vital nutrients – energy, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, calcium, iron, fibre, vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B3 and folic acid at breakfast • The intake of these nutrients – energy, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, calcium, iron, fibre, vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B3 and folic acid in the day’s diet The findings of the survey not only highlight the varying trend of skipping breakfast but also reveal a breakfast skewed towards low intakes of vital nutrients like vitamins, minerals and fibre and high intakes of fat. This report brings out the importance of a nutritionally balanced breakfast in light of existing trends. Nutritional Adequacy
  • 11. People across all 4 cities having a nutritionally inadequate breakfast Energy content of breakfast • 81% of subjects are consuming a nutritionally poor breakfast (less than 25% of the day’s Recommended Dietary Allowance *RDA+ for energy). • 72% of the subjects are not skipping breakfast, but having a breakfast that is inadequate in calories. Breakfast adequacy across age groups • The trend for an inadequate breakfast rather than no breakfast is seen across age groups. • Breakfast picture is slightly better in children than in adults with less breakfast skipping (2 % vs. 7% to 14%) and more breakfast adequacy (28% vs. 11% to 20%). Nutritional Adequacy
  • 12. People across all 4 cities having a nutritionally inadequate breakfast Breakfast adequacy across gender Across age groups there is a tendency for females to be having a comparatively more inadequate breakfast (51% vs. 47% ). Nutritional Adequacy
  • 13. People across all 4 cities having a nutritionally inadequate breakfast Breakfast intake of nutrients – are they adequate? The breakfast for all the people studied is poor for all nutrients except calcium. Calcium intake at 30% of the day’s RDA is high due to the consumption of milk at breakfast. There are gross inadequacies in the intakes of iron and fibre and most B group vitamins in breakfast across all age groups. Nutritional Adequacy
  • 14. Gender and Age Wise Split – Women and Children default more at breakfast and qualitative inadequacies in breakfast are seen across all age/ gender groups Intakes of all other nutrients at breakfast except calcium (in children and adult males) and protein (in children) is significantly lower than 25% of the RDA for most age/gender groups. Nutritional Adequacy
  • 15. Nutritional Adequacy Inadequacy at breakfast not being made up through consumption of rest of the meals • Across all age groups, deficits in the breakfast meal are not being made up by the day’s diet for all nutrients. The daily diets of people across all ages are found to be nutritionally inadequate Findings after Gender and Age Split – Children having more inadequate day’s nutrient intake profiles as compared to adults • Across all age groups, deficits in the breakfast meal are not being made up by the day’s diet for all nutrients
  • 16. Mid-morning meal not making up for the nutrient deficit at breakfast • Intake of nutrients at breakfast plus food consumed at mid-morning is also not meeting 25% of the RDA for all nutrients, thereby highlighting the importance of the first meal of the day. Nutritional Adequacy
  • 17. Breakfast eating habits and nutrient intakes vary across Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai • Breakfast skipping is seen more in Mumbai, followed by Delhi and Kolkata. There is very little skipping in Chennai. • 79%, 76% and 75% of the subjects in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata respectively are having an inadequate breakfast as against 60% in Chennai. Nutrient profile of breakfast and day’s diet • While the nutrient profile of breakfast is the best in Chennai, the day’s nutrient profile is found to be the best in Delhi. Nutritional Adequacy
  • 18. • 1 in 4 claim to skip breakfast. However among teens, 1 in 3 claim to skip breakfast. • ‘No time’ and ‘not hungry’ cited as most common reasons. Is hectic pace of life with late dinner to be blamed? • A whopping 72% of all subjects are skimping or having a nutritionally inadequate breakfast highlighting the lack of awareness of the nutritional aspects of breakfast. • Gender bias in breakfast. Greater breakfast inadequacy among females than males more so in adolescents and adults. • Nutritional adequacy goes down with age. A definite cause of concern since the younger generation looks up to adults as role models. Key findings of the ‘India Breakfast Habits Study’
  • 19. • Amongst all 4 cities, the breakfast nutrient profile is the best in Chennai. Is it because of the existence of well- defined breakfast foods? • More adolescent girls (18%) than boys (4%) are skipping breakfast. This probably is linked to weight control issues. • Nutritional inadequacy of the average breakfast meal. The breakfast for all subjects is poor for all nutrients studied except calcium. • Nutrients missed at breakfast are not being compensated for through the consumption of a mid-morning meal or through other meals in the day, thereby highlighting utmost importance of the first meal of the day.
