-Canaria Islands I.E.S Las Veredillas - Spain
Last issue
Our sixth TPM & third LTTA meeting took place in Santa Kruz of Tenerife in Spain with
the following participants: 1st Lyceum of Ierapetra-Greece, IIS Barsanti Massa-Italy,
Gymnasio Kokkinochorion-Cyprus, Bundesgymnasium Dornbirn-Austria; Agrupamento
de Escolas Pinheiro e Rosa-Portugal; IES Las Veredillas-Tenerife, Spain
The development of student's personality and successful social integration and life skills will
ensure the smooth transition from school life to real life situations.
Conditions that allow the student to develop his personality with strong self-perception, emo-
tional stability, critical and dialectical skill and positive attitude to cooperation self-motivated
personality and a responsible, democratic and free, with social and humanitarian principles,
without religious and cultural prejudices.
At the same time the teachers have the duty to approach school learning to a fast changing
technologically based market, so the students will develop a new awareness of know-how and
skills necessary to find an employment in areas that might have been struck by the economic
crisis.
They need to acquire the necessary skills that will ensure their employment as soon as possi-
ble after graduation or the life skills necessary to excel in Universities and also help in the long
run, to avoid excluding them for a long period of time from the labor market.
It is also essential to cope with unforeseen changes and become happy workers throughout
their active life.
Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of the
seven Canary Islands. It is also the most populated island
of Spain, with a land area of 2,034.38 square kilometres
(785 sq mi) and 904,713 inhabitants,43 percent of the total
population of the Canary Islands.Tenerife is the largest
and most populous island of Macaronesia.
Approximately five million tourists visit Tenerife each year,
the most visited island of the archipelago. It is one of the
most important tourist destinations in Spain, hosting one of
the world's largest carnivals, the Carnival of Santa Cruz de
Tenerife.
Tenerife is served by two airports, Tenerife-North Air-
port and Tenerife-South Airport. Tenerife is the economic capital of
the Canary Islands. The capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tene-
rife, is also the seat of the island council (cabildo insular). The city
is capital of the autonomous community of Canary Islands (shared
with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), sharing governmental institu-
tions such as presidency and minis-
tries. Between the 1833 territorial divi-
sion of Spain and 1927, Santa Cruz de
Tenerife was the sole capital of the Ca-
nary Islands. In 1927 the Crown or-
dered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains
at present. Santa Cruz contains the modern Auditorio de Tenerife, the
architectural symbol of the Canary Islands.
The island is home to the University of La Laguna; founded in 1792
in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, it is the oldest university in the Canar-
ies. The city of La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the
second city most populated on the island and the third in the archipel-
ago. It was capital of the Canary Islands before Santa Cruz replaced
it in 1833.
The earliest known human settlement in the islands date to around 200 BC, by Berbers known as
the Guanches. However, the Cave of the Guanches in the municipality of Icod de los Vinos in the
north of Tenerife, has provided the oldest chronologies of the Canary Islands, with dates around
the sixth century BC.
Regarding the technological level, the Guanches can be framed
among the peoples of the Stone Age, although this terminology is re-
jected due to the ambiguity that it presents. The Guanche culture is
characterized by an advanced cultural development, possibly related
to the Berber cultural features imported from North Africa and a poor
technological development, determined by the scarcity of raw materi-
als, especially minerals that allow the extraction of metals. The main
activity was grazing, although the population were also engaged in
agriculture, as well as fishing and the collection of shellfish from the
shore or using fishing craft.
Tenerife is known internationally for its warm and pleasant climate, as
the "Island of Eternal Spring" (Isla de la Eterna Primavera).[46]
The is-
land, which lies at the same latitude as central Florida, enjoys a warm
tropical climate with an average of 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) in the winter and 24–28 °C (75–82 °F) in
the summer. It has a high annual total of days of sunshine, and low precipitation in all but the
mountain areas.
On the second day there was a trip to Santa
Cruz, during which we visited the surround-
ings and then a guided visit to the Museum of
Nature and Man where we discussed about
job & life skills in the area from the past to
the present. After this, we walked all together
to the Island Government, visited the build-
ing, met with a representative and exchanged
presents. Then we had a Teacher's Meeting
in the Auditorium and free time to see the
city.
Island Government: visited the building, met with a representative and exchanged
presents.
Museum of Nature and Man : we discussed
about job & life skills in the area from the
past to the present !!
On the third day, there was a teachers' meeting at school. The students attended classes. Then we took the bus
to EL TEIDE with a stop at El Portillo Visitor Center. We visited the Teide National Park, the largest and oldest
park on the Canary Islands, that in 2007 was declared as a World Heritage Site in the Natural Well category by
UNESCO. We had a discussion with geologists about job & life skills and they explained to us that the Teide
volcano, which is the third highest volcanic structure in the world, is its main attraction. Then we visited the
museum which features a recreation of the inside of a volcanic tunnel, interactive elements, picture boards
and back-lit panels. The geologists led us to the hall with an audiovisual projector to help us understand the
creation of the Teide-Pico Viejo crater upon which the complex stands. The Botanical Gardens beside the El
Portillo Visitor Centre are there to display, research and reproduce the area's native flora, and we were taught
from agronomists that the gardens receive international backing with the aim of supporting the recovery of
endangered plant species. In the afternoon we visited La Orotava, guided by an architect who explained to us
that the town is made up of wonderfully kept traditional houses, leading the town center to be declared a His-
toric-Artistic Site.

Cheese factory on Tenerife Quesería Montesdeoca
On the fourth day there was a teachers' meeting at school and students attended
classes. Then we took the bus to the South of the island, where we visited the largest
cheese factory on Tenerife (Quesería Montesdeoca). We were guided by the owners
and attended all the productions stages, how cheesemakers produce some of the
tastiest cheeses n the Canary Islands and tested the dairy products. The students
learned about life and job skills of a manager, a cheesemaker and a coat breeder.
Siam Park Water Park: Attended a presentation from some workers
of the different jobs & life skills in a water park.
During the last day local students presented the school and we all attended a typical class. Then we
had a teachers' meeting. After the meeting, we all prepared for the rehearsal of our song about "Life
& Job Skills". Each country has written some lyrics. Finally, we recorded the song. Then there was a
lunch-buffet with typical food from all countries. In the evening the Farewell party with a Carnival
dancing group, dinner cooked by parents and teachers, music and dancing was held at school. Evalu-
ation and closing of the project.
ERASMUS+ brought us together. We shared moments of
laughter, joy & difficulty, enriching lives, opening minds. We
became ourselves, we became European.
