1. Welcome to world history cp! Getting to know a little bit about the classroom and Ms. Herzl.
2. A Little Bit About Me I was born in NY, later moved to VT, where I lived until I came to MA. This is my fourth year at Triton. I graduated from the University of Vermont. I like James Bond movies. I got a puppy this summer!
3. Course Expectations Everyone received a copy of the course expectations which they should read over carefully tonight with a parent/guardian and either have your parents complete the survey on my website or fill out the slip to return tomorrow. You are graded in this class on a points basis. At the end of the quarter the total points you earned are divided by the total number of points available and that is how your grade is determined. Your class will be doing layered curriculum – more on this later!
4. Daily Expectations I expect you to come to class prepared with your materials (textbook, pen/pencil, and binder) everyday and ready to learn. I expect you to work to the best of your abilities during class time. I expect you to be respectful of your peers and teacher – this means not doing anything that would disruptive to the classroom learning environment. I expect you to be mature and take responsibility for your actions.
5. Class Rules Basic Student Responsibilities 1. Cooperate with and respect your teacher and classmates. 2. Respect the rights and property of others. 3. Carry out your basic student responsibilities. 4. Follow the rules as outlined in the student handbook. 1. Come to class prepared and ready to learn. 2. Start your work on time and allow time to finish. 3. Ask for help when you need it. 4. Do your own work. 5. Turn your work in on time. 6. Accept responsibility for grades and other consequences.
6. Class Announcements/assignments I write general information (due dates and upcoming tests) on the bulletin board. I also post information about the current unit we are studying (and the unit outline) on the bulletin board. I update the assignment calendars on my wiki page daily. I highly suggest you check there for updates or sync the calendar with your own (more on that later . . .)
7. Bathroom Passes You will receive two (2) bathroom passes at the beginning of every quarter. When you want to use a pass simply put your name on it, hand it to me (you don’t need to ask permission) and sign out on the clipboard. If you don’t use your bathroom passes during the quarter you may turn them in for extra points on a test (1 pass = 2 points, 2 passes = 5 points). You do not need these passes to go to the nurse.
8. Signing out If you are going to the bathroom/locker/water fountain you need to sign out on the clipboard and take the pass with you. When you return please write the time of your return and place the clipboard back on the hook. If you need to go to the nurse you will need a written pass from me, not the clipboard.
9. Food and Drink You may have food only during snack period (the beginning of 3rd period). When you eat in the room please clean up after yourself. You may bring a beverage as long as it’s in a re-sealable bottle (no cans!). If you finish your beverage please recycle the container. You may chew gum as long as you don’t stick it on the desks! We will always take 2nd lunch.
10. Electronic devices No phones (unless we are using them for a class activity), ipods, game systems, or any other electronic devices are allowed. If I see you with any of the above items they will be placed in the penalty box. 1st time – placed in penalty box until the end of the day. 2nd time – turned over to an administrator. 3rd time – sent to office and parents contacted.
11. Everyday Needs Handouts for the day can always be found on the front table. Markers, glue, and scissors for in class use are in the drawers and available for you to borrow and use in class. Lined, blank, and some colored paper is available. I expect you to come to class prepared everyday, but I do keep some extra pens and pencils on top of the markers container.
12. Extra Copies The extra copies binder is on the front table. If you need another copy find the binder for your class and what you need should be available. If not, please see me.
13. The Pigeon The pigeon is a joke gift that is on loan from a friend. He is very delicate so please avoid touching him and be gentle if you do.
14. Website Your assignment tonight (in addition to reading over the course expectations with your parents and having them sign the slip) is to check out my website: http://msherzlworldhistory.wikispaces.com and fill out the getting to know you survey. Also feel free to look at the other pages and poke around. You’ll be posting on the wiki soon! If you won’t be able to get online tonight to fill out the survey, don’t worry about it. We will be going to the computer lab tomorrow and you’ll have an opportunity to complete it then.
