LEINWIG – EDUCATION & CULTURE
As a major educational hub in the region, it is a great concern of policy makers to enable all citizens the
participation in education and culture. The city has a wide network of public and private schools as well as
secondary education facilities and nurseries. Currently, there is no university in the city. Leinwig libraries
and archives form a bridge between the cultural and educational establishments. The Northland region is a
leader in terms of providing nurseries and has also assumed a leading role in the expansion of full-time
schools.
Leinwig offers a wide range of cultural activities. The theatre Leinwig is located right in the heart of the city
and is the only professional theatre in the city and surrounding region that holds the sections of music
theatre, acting and ballet, as well as their own stage for children and youth theatre. It is one of the
smallest theatres in Germany, which presents three different sectors of the performing arts (opera, plays
and dance). Besides that, Leinwig has a large number of lay stages, which also produce regular shows.
There are two cinemas in Leinwig: a large cinema with 10 theatres and an art house cinema with four
theatres. Independent films and cinematic specialities are shown in the art house cinema „Bali“. Sport
clubs are integral to the community in Leinwig. The program ranges from A like Aerobics to Y like Yoga and
engages Leinwig citizens of all ages, from the toddler to the pensioner. Doubtlessly, movement positively
influences the ability to learn, health and development at school. For this reason, the city Leinwig
encourages the networking and cooperation of sport clubs with other educational facilities, from the nursery
onwards.
A number of bars and restaurants are located door to door, especially at the ‚Alten Hafen’ and in the
‚Schneiderstrasse’. Some have live-music, special offer days and other specialities. Food and drink nourish
body and soul. Not to say the people of Leinwig don’t enjoy having their culinary goods outside. Every
reputable cafe, every restaurant, which is able to, will serve open-air – with warm blankets if necessary.
Restaurants in Leinwig stress the value of regional offers. In 2007, Leinwig was the host of the first
national ‚Tastedays’.
The historic city is already a type of open-air museum per se, but it does hold some additional museums.
The most important museums are the ‘salt museum’ in the building of the former saline, where the
significance of salt in the medieval times and the salt extraction are visually presented, the ‘Leinwig
Landesmuseum’, which shows the culture and history of the region in the prehistory up to 1945, as well its
direct neighbour, the ‘brewery museum’ with its valuable drinking vessel gallery (from 1200 years).
Currently, a new regional museum is under discussion: The “Leinwig Museum” shall be created by merging
two long-established museums in the city, the historic museum and the natural history museum.
