Harrow and the Royal Military
College at Sandhurst, and was
sent to India with a cavalry
commission in 1895.

politician in the Conservative
Party, and was elected to
Parliament. In 1904 he
changed parties and joined
the Liberal Party, but later
returned to the Conservative

8. World War I
In 1910 Churchill became Home
Secretary, one of the most
important members of the
government.

9. World War II
At the start of World War II,
Churchill was again put in charge
of the Navy. In 1940 the war was
going badly for Britain. In May
1940, Neville Chamberlain
resigned as prime minister and
Churchill took his place.

10. Churchill had many meetings with Roosevelt and with
Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union, after
they came into the war. They were called the Big
Three.

11.  In 1945, his Conservative party
lost an election. He stopped
being Prime Minister.
 In 1951, he became Prime
Minister again.
 In 1953, he was knighted and
became Sir Winston, and also
won the Nobel Prize in
Literature.
 In 1955, he retired from being
Prime Minister.
 In 1964, he retired from
Parliament.

12. Churchill died on 24 January
1965 and was given a state
funeral.
