TheOuterPlanets By: Leslie Griger & Danielle Jasinski
Jupiter Has 16 moons 1 year=12 Earth years Temperature is -148ºC (-234ºF) Largest planet, could fit up to 1000 Earths inside it Made out of dense hydrogen, helium, water, nitrogen, and other gases over a tiny rocky core Great Red Spot has been there for over 300 years and it is 2 Earths in diameter Rotates in about 10 hours Possesses 62 known satellites 4 of Jupiter’s moons are the size of planets Two and a half times the mass of all the other planets combined
Saturn Has 62 moons Made mostly of hydrogen & helium Second largest planet, over 700 Earths could fit inside Temperature: -178ºC (-288ºF) 1,514,500,000 km from the sun Has thousands of rings made of billions of ice & rock particles Particle size ranges from a grain of sugar to the size of a house Each individual ring orbits at a different speed Saturn year=29.4 Earth years Saturn has the largest rings of any planet
Uranus Temperature is -216ºC (-357ºF) Rotates on is axis once every 17 Earth hours Has 22 moons Giant ball of gas & liquid, has no solid surface Third largest planet, over 70 Earths could fit inside Orbits the sun once every 84 Earth years Has 11 rings Has 21 known satellites Uranus has a strong magnetic field Blue-green color is made up of tiny methane crystals
Neptune Neptune year=165 Earth years Has 8 moons Atmosphere=Hydrogen:85%, Helium:13%, Methane:2% Fourth largest planet, about 60 Earths could fit into Neptune Consists of hazy atmosphere & strong winds Tilt of axis=28.32º Temperature: -214ºC (-353ºF) One of Neptune’s moons, Triton has the some of the coldest temperatures in the solar system 8 known satellites Neptune’s day=16.11 hours
Similarities of outer planets All are gas planets Planets all have rings Made mostly of hydrogen & helium Outer planets are all much bigger then the inner planets At the center is a rocky core Every outer planet has moons
Differences of outer planets Neptune has by far the longest year of any planet Saturn’s rings are much larger then any other planets rings Uranus is colder then any other outer planet Jupiter has a greater number of satellites then any other planet
