English-Spanish Translation of the Article “Reading in the Disciplines: The

Abstract

Nowadays, it is difficult to adolescents reading different
subject areas. They struggle with text because they do not have
developed comprehension strategies, vocabulary, and
knowledge that are required to understand complex discipline
specific texts. Therefore, this work will be useful source to help
students that are facing some problems in reading. In the
translation of this article in to a Spanish version, some of the
tools to use are the following techniques: borrowing, claque,
literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and
adaptation.
Background

This study proposed here focused on the translation
of English-Spanish. Reading in the Disciplines: The
Challenges of Adolescent Literacy (Carol D. Lee, Anika
Spratley, 2010). Reading in the disciplines explains how
adolescents may have problems with text for many reasons;
vocabulary, knowledge, general knowledge of topics and text
structures, knowing of what to do when comprehension
breaks down, and proficiency in monitoring their own
reading comprehension. However, adolescent readers in the
schools face more complex challenges. The adolescent
readers struggle with high specific demands of written texts
for different content-areas in order to prepare themselves for
citizenship.
Objectives
To facilitate a useful source to help those students who are having
some problems in reading because this translation work explains
different aspects that a reader might face in a technical reading.
To translate from English to Spanish the article “Reading in the
Disciplines: The Challenges of Adolescent Literacy” applying some
translation techniques.

To analyse the translation and describe how the reading problems
encountered were sorted out.
Review of Literature.

According to Jean-Paul and Jean Darbelnet (2000) the
following techniques are the most useful to perform a
translation:
-Borrowing
-Claque
-Literal translation
-Transposition

-Modulation
-Equivalence
- Adaptation

Of course other theorists have contributed to the
development of a linguistic approach to translation, but the
abovementioned have been singled out for discussion
primarily because of their influence, and also because they
are perhaps the most representative of the trends of the time.
Method
Anything used as an instrument to facilitate a work
translation can be called a tool. A tool assists in getting
a work done more effectively. Therefore, in order to
translate this text, the translator will use different kind
of tools :
English-Spanish dictionaries, synonym-antonym
dictionaries, on-line dictionaries, and other references
materials available, points of view of informants
(translation teachers and bilingual teachers )
