• We have been using Work breakdown structure(WBS) to
manage complex projects from the mid of the late 20th
Century, as it was only available method by then.
• WBS was released in 1984 and since then it has become
one of the most comfortable tool for Project Managers
because they could plan and share their projects with
their teams and executive managers using this tool.
• The only problem with WBS is all the components and
the facts are not be known right at the beginning of the
Project and the requirement keep changing frequently.
• These problem made an entry for Agile to enter the
game. During the spring of 2000, 17 developers Martin
Folwer, Jim Highsmith, Jon Kern, Jeff Sutherland, Ken
Schwaber, and Bob Martin met in Oregon to discuss
how they can speed up effectively the development
process to bring the new product to the market faster
than expected.
• This innovative discussion gave birth to Agile
Methodologies. Though it didn’t result in the same Agile
Methodology which we are using now, but this meeting
played a critical role in Agile’s history.
5. The Birth of Hybrid Model
• Every methodology comes with their own set of
advantages and disadvantages.
• Waterfall Methodology is actually costing more and
finishing later than planned.
• Whereas in Agile customer can be able to see the results in
short time after the project has started, not only this it can
also be able to accommodate and deliver the requirement
changes within the given timeline.
• Using Agile methodology, it’s not easy for a Project
Manager or the PMO to estimate accurately or effectively
as when the project is going to complete.
• Now the question is if Waterfall is not the right method and
looks like Agile is not the one size fits all, then what is it?
This question gave birth to Hybrid Project Management
Methodology.
• It’s not a new methodology, all of us using this
methodology from many years by now, only it’s gaining its
popularity now because it combines the best of Agile and
WBS from Waterfall model to create a whole new Project
Management Model that can fit most of the Projects.
6. What is Hybrid Model?
• It is a practice of mixing Agile and Traditional
Waterfall Project Management elements to create a
custom approach.
• Hybrid PMO is which integrates all projects
executives approaches regardless of whether
projects are delivered using Agile, Waterfall or
Hybrid approaches.
• Hybrid PMO supports end-to-end portfolio
management approaches and the integration of all
the Project execution approach across all the
business functions.
• A typical Hybrid PMO can be compared with the
Hybrid Car. They integrate traditional Project
management with leaner, faster Agile principles to
deliver the best outcome regardless of methodology.
• A Hybrid PMO model plugged in to a business-
driven mindset, where company can be benefited
from both from the speed of Agile and more detailed
aspects of traditional Project Management.
7. Benefits of Hybrid Project
Management Approach
• Hybrid Project Management Approach is the
approach which gives freedom to the technical
team like Agile and Freedom to Project Manager
like Waterfall.
• It can help Project Manager to prepare the
estimates which are close accurate and at the same
time the team can react to market changes and
demands in place of what they have planned.
• Both developers and consumers agree on the
deliverables at an early stage in the development
lifecycle.
• Progress can be marked easily as the entire scope
of work is already known in advance
• Testing team can prepare the test scripts from the
requirement documentation while the coding takes
place simultaneously.
8. Disadvantage of Hybrid Methodology
& Choosing the right one
• Hybrid Methodology has inability to track deliverables or
whether the set of deliverables will be met.
• Continuous administrative intervention to resolve team
conflicts results in a waste of time and effort.
• Hybrid can be a better choice if an organization is primarily
based on the theory of competitive advantage, which allows
them the fluidity of Projects.
• Now we have understood the fundamental aspect of Hybrid
Project Management and we already know the fundamental
aspect of Agile Project Management. So, now the question is
which one to choose and which can be effective depending
your organizational model.
9. Hybrid or Agile which is better?

• I have explained four fundamental aspect of both Agile and Hybrid model in the
below table, which can help you finalize which one you can choose over the other
and which one can be better knowing your organization culture and environment.
# Agile Project Management Hybrid Project Management
1 Consumers involvement is available
throughout the Project
Consumers involvement is only needed at
milestones
2 Mid-Project changes are possible, but it
could affect the Project expenses,
schedules and other factors
Changes are not easily implemented in this
methodology; the best thing is Project Scope
is known during project initiation.
3 It is best for smaller or mid-sized
companies with having high-level team
coordination.
In this methodology team coordination is
limited to handoff points.
4 Project funding plans are easily
implemented through this methodology.
This approach is a little complicated to
implement project funding plans effectively
• I will be explaining the Hybrid PMO model & the detail about Hybrid Methodology in
Part-2 of this session.
