Introductory Problem Statement
SmartDriver is a mobile application which has been designed to keep track of the driver's driving habits and to generate a real time report using the statistics and locations. This report can then be submitted to the registered users (parents or managers of the transportation companies renting their vehicles) who want to analyze the statistics of driving behavior. This software basically helps in generating a detailed tracking report of the user and also allows for online user's location. The detailed report can then be sent to the registered users as and when scheduled.
Features of the application:
It calculates rapid acceleration and hard breaking from the GPS data smart phones.
It reports the GPS locations of person driving to parent, whenever rapid acceleration and hard breaks occurs.
It provides the feedback to driver periodically on top speed reached, number of rapid accelerations and hard breaks.

History and Research
SmartDriver is a mobile application which helps in keeping track of car speed when teenagers are driving by using vehicle tracking devices.
Several types of vehicle tracking devices exist. Typically they are classified as "passive" and active". Passive" devices store GPS location, speed, heading sometimes a trigger event such as key on/off, door open/closed. Once the vehicle returns to a predetermined point, the device is removed and data downloaded computer for evaluation. Passive systems include auto download type that transfer data via wireless download. "Active" devices also collect the same information but usually transmit data in near-real-time via cellular or satellite networks to a computer data center for evaluation.
Actually, there are many car speed detectors to detect the speed of car. Such as The Radar Detector, Laser detector, GPS speed tracker and so on.
Radar detector and laser are using the same principle. They use Doppler radar to beam a radio wave at the vehicle, and then infer vehicle's speed by measuring the Doppler effect-moderated change in the reflected wave's frequency. These are most common device to detect a car speed. But they are most used by police or law enforcement. Most radar detectors are used so the driver can reduce car's speed before being ticketed for speeding. This is one way to find people if drives safely in some cases. But there is a real limit for Radar detectors if we want to insure driver are driving safely in the whole trip. Firstly, it’s really not efficient to set up Radar detectors in every mile beside the road, it would cost a lot of budget to do that. Secondly, is not real-time system. It can’t enforce driver reduce their dangerous driving behaviors immediately.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. Nowadays, hundreds of the GPS devices are used in cars. They very functional. Most of GPS devices can notify locations, speed car, limits the road, and the predicting arrival time of destinations and so on. Basic GPS measurements yield only a position, and neither speed nor direction. However, most GPS units can automatically derive velocity and direction of movement from two or more position measurements. The disadvantage of this principle is that changes in speed or direction can only be computed with a delay, and that derived direction becomes inaccurate when the distance travelled between two position measurements drops below or near the random error of measurement. GPS units can use measurements of the Doppler shift of the signals received to compute velocity accurately.
GPS is widely used in cars, but there’s rarely to see people use GPS monitor a teenager’s driving behaviors. SmartDriver has more advantage for parents to keep tracking their children’s driving behaviors by smartphones than just a GPS device.

Objectives and Goals
Objectives:
The main objective of Car Speed Detector (CSD) is to prevent accidents and improve the driving habits of people by providing feedback about their drives and generating a report on their drive. With this application being used by law enforcement we hope to see a rapid decline in crimes such as hit and runs, drive by shootings robberies. We are very optimistic that CSD will make the roads much safer for people to drive on.
Goals:
Reduce the amount of accidents
Prevent future accidents
Reduce amount of crime
Reduce amount of traffic jams
Reduce the number of DUI’s and DWI’s
Give parents a peace of mind about the safety their child driving
Quality of life:
Everyday in the USA (even worldwide) people are losing their lives as a result of careless driving. It’s so unfortunate to see a person lose his or her life over something that can easily be prevented. We are very optimistic about Car Speed Detector because of its potential to rapidly minimize the amount of tragedies such as these. Imagine a world where accidents, speed tickets, DUIs/DWIs, and high chases a rare occurrence. We have high hope that CSD will be able to make this a reality in the near future.

16. Driver Score calculations
Following are the rules to consider for calculating score.
a. Driving alerts score is all penalty points collected prior week.
b. Rapid Acceleration: (Delta distance/Delta time measured in meter/sec). Calculate speed over 10 sec period’s vs. prior 10 sec period or collect estimated speed info from GPS. Rule: If acceleration is +1m/sec sq2, then it’s one penalty point.
c. Hard braking: Measure distance over 5 sec period’s vs. prior 5 sec period measured in meter/sec. If delta is -1.5m/sec sq2, then it’s one penalty.
d. Speeding: If driving speed is default +70 mph (adjustable in account setup) for more than 20 sec. one penalty point.
e. Define start of trip. Perhaps refine "home start location based on most frequently used.
f. Define end of trip.
g. Calculate exit direction: After car speed goes to zero for 5 sec, measure motion (right/left) based on data from gyroscope 6 axis motion. If more than 1 meter sideway then define status as exit left (a - driver) or right (status b - passenger) based on geo location of app.

User Profile
The SmartDriver app is built with a focus on safe driving, importantly minimization of road accidents by delivering constant feedback on driving exercises. While the auxiliary benefits can include review of fuel consumption, professional driving evaluations and on road assistance with generic car problems. The app can prove to come in handy establishing safe driving skills.
The commonplace use of SmartDriver would thus be catering the novice drivers with useful statistics to work on in order develop a sense of driving maturity. Young inexperienced drivers are likely to benefit from SmartDriver with someone monitoring their driving habits and providing exclusive assessment. In effect, the app can help anyone who needs to find out how their driving pattern is different and areas in which they can improve.
As talked of earlier, transport companies can utilize SmartDriver to evaluate driving performances of their employees and direct them with specific instructions. Also, anybody who is driving a car can make the use of this app from trip ratings, knowing cost efficiency of their driving and how casual motoring is affecting their vehicle. Further assistance can be provided in finding the gas stations, nearby repair shops and traffic updates.
