33. BCIT Technology Lifecycle - Definitions - Applications Researching Investing Retiring Steady Applications consideration for future implementation. Applications should be used only for pre-approved, proof-of-concept projects. Must be kept isolated from other 3 quadrants Applications that are mission critical. Core Applications that deliver on the strategy of the institute. Usually found in the Core Services Catalogue. Applications being phased out Any tool in the retiring phase that is core to the strategic goals or objectives of the institution should have a replacement app in either the Researching or Investing quadrants. Applications that are solid and mainstream. Products in this phase of the cycle may be maintained for upgrades. New or expanded implementations are discouraged. Clear articulation from the President’s Into the 21 st Century strategy document (May 1, 2001) – first mention of “polytechnic institution” Dean’s Educational Technology Vision and Goals Whitepaper (July 8, 2004) – genesis of TEK Vision Consulting assistance to help us create the TEK vision (Sept 2004) – clear articulation of 5 goal areas TEK Vision got funded for $25 million over 5 years to begin April 1, 2005 (Oct 2004) Public Communication of TEK via public web and showcasing
Enhance innovation in teaching and learning The TEK Initiative is focused on advancing BCIT's primary interests: teaching excellence and applied learning. BCIT will support faculty so they can advance their skills in the use of new educational technologies, to revise their curriculum and develop new methodologies. BCIT will exemplify best practice in post-secondary education. Advance the institute's applied research agenda BCIT's applied research mandate will be advanced by creating innovative education and information technology applications which are implemented through broadly accessible advanced network applications that use BCIT's link to the BCNet high capacity optical fibre research and education network. Applications created and implemented under the TEK initiative will provide a rich source of opportunities for increased BCIT connection and collaboration with industry partners and the global research community. Connect BCIT to the world We will connect BCIT to the world ensuring that communication, learning and teaching can occur anywhere, at any time. We will link students with industry - essentially establishing communities of practice where potential employees interact with future employers long before graduation day. Students working off campus in clinical settings and at co-op placements will sustain a connection with BCIT, their peers, their instructors and Institute services. Equip our learning spaces BCIT will equip its learning spaces so that faculty and learners can access the internet and take advantage of the latest display technologies. Learning and teaching applications will be accessible within our classrooms, in our libraries, on our campuses, in transit, at home and in the workplace. Collaborative teaching and learning tools will foster innovative teaching and learning in large group, small group and one-to-one settings, independent of time and location. The Business of BCIT: Ensuring Effective Work Processes The activities associated with this goal area are concentrated in IT Services in the areas of Enterprise Application Services, Web Services and Information Services & Strategy. The intent of this goal area is to review and improve the various business processes and applications used at BCIT to administer the functions required to support the administration of teaching, learning and research activities of the Institute.
WebCT 6CE – Enterprise Architect guided project team to implement full integration of WebCT (Learning Mgmt System) with Banner Student (ERP) and myBCIT (Luminis Portal) Server Architecture Consolidation – consolidated over 100 physical hardware boxes to 6 larger boxes (P Series – mission critical apps, Blade Centres – High Performance Computing, and VMWare – small server virtualisation) ITIL Change Management – setup the Change Advisory Board and it has far and away been the most effective weekly meeting in IT Services. The CAB meets every Wed to discuss and approve changes. We use a home grown application written in Lotus Domino to keep a record of all the RFCs and a calendar to schedule the changes. The Enterprise Architect has an approval role on the board.
Enterprise Architect has an approval role for all Projects presented at the PAB and all changes presented at the CAB
This is a Capability Maturity Model for Enterprise Architecture that we developed at BCIT. It allows us to talk about how far we have come with EA and where we are going. As we move forward with building out EA artefacts and using them to support the IT Governance process, we will change the culture of the institute.
Four indices – Complexity – of our technology environment, Functional Richness – richness of the technical environment to support teaching, learning, research and business, New Deliver Capacity in IT Services, Value / Effectiveness – as seen by our clients in education and business.
This is an example of how the complexity in messaging over time.
Manage complexity with ITG and EA Increased effectiveness by using EA and Best Practices – ITIL, BA, PMO
EA Roles at BCIT in relation to IT Governance Model Guidance: A discussion regarding how the new idea may change the architecture and/or how the existing architecture can support the idea. Consult: Involvement in architecture design and assist with architectural alignment - specifically an initial EA review and test to identify existing architecture components Approval: Approval of technology and its accurate representation in the architecture - including documentation and updating of all EA artifacts – approval process built into PM and Chg Mgmt
Historical Architecture Administratively focused – Banner ERP is the centre of the technical (application) world. Many point to point integrations – not in real time. Many data issues.
Goal Architecture Web Properties unite our applications and services. Implement enterprise data architecture, enterprise process architecture and leverage that into developing a cohesive integration architecture to provide a single point of entry and contact for our students, faculty, staff and guests.
Strategic/Core Applications are what IT should be focusing on. If applications are in the Retiring stage, then the Institute needs to start Research projects to replace them.
