Revival of the medieval castletown of
Anavatos, Chios1
Final diploma design theses
The project in question is about the revival of the abandoned settle-
ment of Anavatos, in central Chios.
The proposed scenario concerns the revival of the settlement through
the creation of a residential area, with the possibility of housing three
hundred new residents, and the installation of cultural uses in the ruins
of the citadel. The main purpose of this intervention is, basically, the
protection of the settlement through its rehabilitation.
The project concerns the whole settlement, but, as it has been un-
derstood through the analysis of the site, each one of its parts de-
mands a special treatment, due to its different character, place and
current situation (citadel, central part, new village).
The main uses that are proposed to be hosted in the shells with rec-
ognizable structure are these of culture and recreation, as well as
some public hostels. The historicity and the unique character of the
citadel section are favoring the installation of such uses.
In the old part outside the citadel (Mesochori), the residence is
proposed as basic use, and along the central axis are placed the
necessery uses to cover the basic needs of the residents and visitors
(shopping, culture and leisure) and some hostels.
The re-design of the shells focuses on their relation, where they are
joined, and on the transition from the inner-private spaces to the out-
er-public ones. As the outdoor space equates with the public, we
try to create semi-public spaces around the entrances of the hous-
es, while, at the same time, private outdoor spaces are provided to
most of them, thanks to the possibility of access to the roofs of their
neighboring buildings.

This paper examines the contemporary interventions in historic
fortification complexes and the manner in which the new
architecture converses with the existing structures.
Through deep analysis of several European examples of restored
castles and towers, we search out the dialog between new
interventions and existing historic fabric. We analyzed different types
of interventions in which the new uses, the chosen materials, as well
as, the manner in which the historical shells are treated, are different.
However, their common point is the creativity that characterizes
the interventions, the selection of strong forms and contemporary
materials that represent a new clear architectural phase, which
converses with the existing structure. Consequently, the revival of
these buildings is achieved with the help of new architecture, and
no longer via the repetition of older forms. The dominant feature
is the dialogue generated by the contrasts between the old and
the new, the relationship of which is determined by the architect,
thanks to the use of various means of expression.
The aim of this research is to obtain conclusions regarding the way
that contemporary architecture “invades” a historical building, and
to make an attempt to answer the following questions:
How can we achieve balance and unity between the new and the
old?
To what extent can we intervene in the building and how is this
need justified?
In what ways are the values of the monument highlighted through
the new design and how does the use of contemporary materials
affect this process?
Which uses and materials are considered to be the most appropriate
for the forts?

This paper studies the design of a hotel and bathing facili-
ties in the coastal area of Mikra, in Thessaloniki. Due to the
advantageous location of the site, the main objective of the
composition was the broadening of the visual field, and the
exploitation of the view to the sea, the city and the adja-
cent river (Anthemountas). At the same time, our goal was a
mild intervention, which would not disturb visually the char-
acter of the area.
Thus, the greatest part of the establishment, which includes
the lobby, guest rooms, a bathing facility, an event space
and a restaurant, is located on the ground floor, and is
covered by an embankment, leaving visible only the two
fronts to the sea and the river. Visible to the visitor is only the
geometric volume of the upper floor, which includes guest
rooms and a cafeteria. It is an elongated rectangular vol-
ume, which faces the river, and is over a gallery which leads
the visitor to the main entrance of the hotel.

Residential complex in Como, Italy4
This project concerns the design of a residential complex in
the center of the city of Como.
The aim is to create a web through repetition of a dwelling
unit. As housing unit is considered a volume of a cubic form.
This unit is initially repeated vertically, composing a cluster
that consists of four blocks, which can then be repeated
on the horizontal axis to generate the desired tissue.
During this repetition, there is created a succession of full-
ness and emptiness among the cubic volumes, as a refer-
ence to the organization of the urban fabric of the historic
city center, where the prevalence of the full against the
void is clear.
Morphologically, this structure follows a simple design, and
is fully differentiated from its neighboring buildings.
Its contemporary character is expressed by the geometric
design and the selected materials (concrete, glass, metal).
The complete differentiation is performed deliberately, in
order to create a dialectical relation between old and
new in terms of urban scale, without overshadowing the
neighboring historical buildings.

Regeneration of Doxa stream in
Thessaloniki5
Section, scale 1:200
The study area is located east of the center of Thes-
saloniki. The river has been altered greatly in the
past years, as a consequence of gradual deterio-
ration and abandonment.
The design goal is to highlight the important ele-
ments of the landscape, especially the significant
recorded vegetation and the liquid component,
through a mild intervention, which will contribute to
maintaining the local character of the stream, as a
green lung and a gathering spot in the neighbor-
hood.
The natural terrain is restored in order to give the
greatest possible space to the physical element. At
the same time, a central route is designed. It pass-
es through the entire field of study, directing the
visitors to sitting areas, promenades and play sites,
that are located along the stream.

As part of the require-
ments of the inervention
the huts and illegal resi-
dences are launched

are retained. Through
new woodwork they
are converted to game

During the analysis

there were detected
subregions with special
characteristics, which
are included in the
new design: the old

it is the highest point
of the area. At the the
lowest point of the
stream, the natural
amphitheatrical ter-
rain is exploited and
used as a sitting area
aroung the pine.
26
The present study took part in an architectural
competition for the redevelopment of a pub-
lic open space in the center of Bologna.
In this area there is now a small park, which has
been greatly degraded over the years. The
aim of the proposal is its revitalization through
a series of mild interventions and the promo-
tion of the wall that it encloses, which is part of
the second medieval walling of the city.
It is proposed to create a space of interaction
between the visitors, through the installation
of an interactive network that enables the
communication and the projection of various
material. At the same time, the fence of the
park is removed and the accesses from the
adjacent streets are redesigned.

Due to the advantageous location of the site, the main objective of the composition was the broadening of the visual field, and the exploitation of the view to the sea, the city and the adja- cent river (Anthemountas). At the same time, our goal was a mild intervention, which would not disturb visually the char- acter of the area. Thus, the greatest part of the establishment, which includes the lobby, guest rooms, a bathing facility, an event space and a restaurant, is located on the ground floor, and is covered by an embankment, leaving visible only the two fronts to the sea and the river. Visible to the visitor is only the geometric volume of the upper floor, which includes guest rooms and a cafeteria. It is an elongated rectangular vol- ume, which faces the river, and is over a gallery which leads the visitor to the main entrance of the hotel. Teaching team: Castro E., Tellios A. The aim is to create a web through repetition of a dwelling unit. As housing unit is considered a volume of a cubic form. This unit is initially repeated vertically, composing a cluster that consists of four blocks, which can then be repeated on the horizontal axis to generate the desired tissue. During this repetition, there is created a succession of full- ness and emptiness among the cubic volumes, as a refer- ence to the organization of the urban fabric of the historic city center, where the prevalence of the full against the void is clear. Morphologically, this structure follows a simple design, and is fully differentiated from its neighboring buildings. Its contemporary character is expressed by the geometric design and the selected materials (concrete, glass, metal). The complete differentiation is performed deliberately, in order to create a dialectical relation between old and new in terms of urban scale, without overshadowing the neighboring historical buildings. + 6.00 + 14.00 + 18.00+ 10.00

Regeneration of Doxa stream in Thessaloniki5 Section, scale 1:200 The study area is located east of the center of Thes- saloniki. The river has been altered greatly in the past years, as a consequence of gradual deterio- ration and abandonment. The design goal is to highlight the important ele- ments of the landscape, especially the significant recorded vegetation and the liquid component, through a mild intervention, which will contribute to maintaining the local character of the stream, as a green lung and a gathering spot in the neighbor- hood. The natural terrain is restored in order to give the greatest possible space to the physical element. At the same time, a central route is designed. It pass- es through the entire field of study, directing the visitors to sitting areas, promenades and play sites, that are located along the stream. view point accesses to the stream widening of the strem traces of huts as games site pedestrian streets focus on the liquid element green lung sitting space under the pine amphitheatrical landscaping main route

At the the lowest point of the stream, the natural amphitheatrical ter- rain is exploited and used as a sitting area aroung the pine.
  • 26. 26 The present study took part in an architectural competition for the redevelopment of a pub- lic open space in the center of Bologna. In this area there is now a small park, which has been greatly degraded over the years. The aim of the proposal is its revitalization through a series of mild interventions and the promo- tion of the wall that it encloses, which is part of the second medieval walling of the city. It is proposed to create a space of interaction between the visitors, through the installation of an interactive network that enables the communication and the projection of various material. At the same time, the fence of the park is removed and the accesses from the adjacent streets are redesigned.
