Midwifery has not always been shown in a positive light, back in the 1900s, midwives became the
recipients of attack by male physicians for the supposed high rates of infant and maternal mortality,
coined as 'the midwife problem' (Hunter: 2016). In the 19th century, midwifery became prominent
within medical institutions, but were regarded as 'pathological mothers' (Hunter: 2016, 66).
Interestingly, within this time frame, not only were woman who had home births viewed as
pathological, but also the process of birth was described as being pathological (Hunter: 2016).
Midwifery is frequently associated with being on the opposite end of the spectrum in comparison
to the medical model, thus resisting the over medicalization of women's bodies (Shaw: 2013).
Midwives allow for women to have a birth plan, providing care with the focus solely on the
woman, with her best interests in mind and allowing her to make decisions freely. While giving
birth, the emotional wellbeing of the mother and her family are also taken into consideration as

From her booking to antenatal appointments we had built up a good relationship. Time had been
spent with Ms N and we discussed at length her birth plan, signs of labour, her fears and what
coping strategies she had in place to deal with early labour. Ms N eventually went into labour and it
happened very quickly, according to the midwife who initially assessed her on arrival to the labour
ward she went from 3cm to 8cm dilation in about 2 hours with regular strong contractions 3–4 every
10 minutes. I arrived just as she had finished having her epidural sited and the first top up. Ms N
got to 10cm dilation and was given 2hours for descent, as the head of the baby was still high upon
vaginal examination. Active pushing commenced and was attempted for 1 and a half hours, head
still remained high. By this time her epidural had started to become less effective and she was
experiencing a lot of pain. Unfortunately due to an obstetric emergency the anaesthetist and
consultant were unable to attend to her. Unable to tolerate the Entonox she remained in pain until
the consultant became available. As it turned out the baby's head was in a transverse position, this
