1. Peer Tutor Report
Reflecting upon my first year as a peer tutor, I must say that it has been an excellent experience
because of what it has provided me. Strictly speaking, my ability to teach has improved, I have
obtained many skills, and have found ways to use what I have acquired, to help me in the not–so–far
future. Walking into a learning center class brought a very unique learning experience that varied
from other classrooms. This stems from the fact that this class had many students all of different
ages working on many different courses instead of one; some students would be in the classroom
completing math homework, while others would be studying for science. Consequently, I learned
that every student varied in their ability to learn; some of the younger students needed me to walk
through questions step–by–step while most of the older students just required assistance on how to
approach a problem. Furthermore, there were students that had difficulty grasping concepts because
of my teaching method. Subsequently, I learned how to assist other students by applying the
different types of learning methods. These learning methods essentially helped students use the
strongest of their three senses to their advantage....show more content...
This was partly because of my lack of patience; I was very eager to move on with a question and
noticed a little bit of anger build up inside of me when a student failed multiple times. Along with
this lack of patience, I also noticed that I was completing small steps to a question in my head,
rather than on paper with the student. Consequently, the student was left in a state of confusion, and
my presence was rather useless. Thankfully, as time passed and I set out to fix these issues, my
ability to teach and be helpful to my peers drastically increased. In the end, I acquired many useful
teaching methods and other skills that could aid me in the

2. My Peer Tutoring Class
After experiencing being a peer tutor my senior year, I think you should become one too. My
peer tutoring class was Algebra 2. A class I did fairly well in. I've learned lot of new things during
this experience. I've learned that everybody learns differently, multiple people struggle with the
same thing whether it be procrastination, time management, or even listening. I've also learned
how to apply these things to my studies as well. I learned from their mistakes. I struggled with
procrastination as well as listening in my own studies. So while I was helping them, I was also
helping myself. I also learned how to help students who learned in two completely different ways.
One was a visual learner while the other was one

3. Becoming A Tutor: Course Analysis
This course has taught me many things about myself and who I am as a tutor. When beginning
this course, I was not sure what to expect from the overall class. I knew that I enjoyed helping
others and I find myself to be a strong leader, so this course would be enjoyable for me. I expected
myself to be a tutor who was helpful and friendly, and I hoped to be the best tutor I could be.
Becoming the tutor I am today took time, and there is still lots of room for development. Before
starting this course, I certainly did not have well developed skills that are needed to be a great
tutor. I have grown as a student and as a tutor throughout this semester, and I have even applied my
knowledge from this course into other classes. I love helping others,...show more content...
The concept which I found most useful was B.F Skinner's operant conditioning theory. His theory
touched upon positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, and punishments, which are are
relative things to consider while dealing with students in a classroom. Positive reinforcement is
rewarding the students for good behaviour, which is something I was constantly doing with my
literary group while they were reading. After each students turn reading, I would compliment their
good work to reinforce their confidence in reading aloud. Negative reinforcement is telling the
students what they are doing is wrong so they can stop, in class I would point out the wrongdoings of
a student so they have a chance to correct themselves. When a student is distracted while reading and
not looking at the novel, I would quietly get their attention and point at the novel to show them they
should be reading. Punishments are used to decrease a negative and unwanted behaviour. In class if
a student acts up or continually does something wrong, then they are able to be punished in order to
eliminate a bad behaviour. Overall, B.F Skinner's concept of operant conditioning is something
which I have used throughout the entire

4. Becoming A High-Performing Student
When it comes to being a high–performing student, it is my responsibility to lend a hand to others
facing challenges of their own. One of the ways I have acted on this responsibility is by tutoring
others, with one experience standing out. Towards the end of junior year, while excelling in
Precalculus/Trigonometry Honors, it came to my attention that my neighbor and close friend Dave
was in quite the predicament. Dave had recently failed his two previous tests in non–honors
Trigonometry, and failing his final exam would end his Lake Central football career. Desperate not
to lose his opportunity to play football, Dave approached me for help. We started by putting together
a two–day study plan, and although this meant I would have less time to prepare...show more

At the outset, Dave's situation was pretty dire: The problems he worked through on his own study
guide were almost all wrong, and more importantly, he did not understand the material that he would
be confronting on his final exam. Remaining patient, we began anew, approaching each problem by
understanding and correcting Dave's mathematical approach. We did not move on to the next
problem until Dave and I were certain he understood the current problem and how that problem
illustrated the point of the relevant lesson. Together we completed half of the study guide. I
returned home for my weekly piano lessons, and then resumed trigonometry with Dave later that
night. Having regrouped the next day, Dave showed quick improvement, being able to confidently
explain the underlying concepts. Five hours of intensive effort had paid off, and when I left Dave's
house that evening, we both felt confident. Three weeks later, Dave approached me with a grin and
a football. "Benji," he exclaimed, "I passed!" We embraced and went outside – Dave wanted to teach
me some

5. College Admissions Essay: I Want To Be A Writer
The top shelf of my closet contains a towering, rather intimidating pile of notebooks.
A few of them are completely blank, devoid of anything besides blue college–ruled lines. Most,
however, are well–worn, with pages upon pages covered in handwritten rainbows of ink and
graphite. Even though their contents may not be worth the space, and they are completely filled, I
cannot bring myself to throw those notebooks away. They are a part of my history.
I've always been inclined towards language; my first memory involves sitting in my grandparents'
living room at age three, reading Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham out loud. About ten years later,
my ninth grade English teacher read my first "high school essay" and could almost immediately tell
that I enjoyed writing.
Although his assessment was correct, I often felt separated from my friends who self–identify as
writers – I never had the same inherent creativity in my narratives, the same ability to build escapist

As a child, I had often responded to the question "what do you want to be when you grow up?"
with an enthusiastic "I want to be an author!" Therefore, I had quite a bit of nostalgia attached to
that sentiment, and panicked when I began to be asked about college majors. I saw myself as too
scientific for the arts, but too artistic for the sciences.
During a period of frantic research in the autumn of my junior year, I found an article about
linguistics, which seemed like an extremely welcome balance between the two disciplines – it is, at
its most basic, the study and interpretation of language and grammar. It would allow me to analyze
intricacies instead of create them, which I felt much more equipped to do. Even the grammatical
aspect of the field sounded incredibly appealing – as a Latin student, I am surprisingly comfortable
with grammar.
I suddenly felt like I had a path to follow in my post–high school education – and a versatile one at

Editing is one of the most important parts of filmmaking. Film Editing is one of my favorite
things to do. But let's get to the point. I have recently graduated from a recognized film school and
I just created a short film that goes viral. I am anxious for a TV/ film production company to see
my produced video. Or if that doesn't work you make ads to get your name out there for local job
openings, or recruitments. Well no one's interested in an award winning filmmaker! A production
company with standards is not going to consider a student who just graduated from a film school. A
degree in law, master's or engineering degree all are bait for finding a job easily. Sure I may know

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
I am an AVID Tutor at my old high school Sierra Vista High School in Baldwin Park. This is
going to be my second year working at SVHS and so far I love working at this school and helping
the students. I work with sophomore, junior and, senior students. AVID is a college readiness
program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. It is also
a program that motivates students to try to go to college. As an AVID tutor, I am responsible for
helping the students by tutoring them in small groups in a specific subject matter (Math–History) by
using homework/lesson discussion in groups. We use the Socratic questioning to get students to
think critically about a problem they are struggling on and help them when they really cannot solve
the question they have. I try to find resources (videos, notes, textbooks) to help the students get a
better understanding of their question. Every Friday I grade...show more content...

becoming an identity theft victim can happen to anyone. However, it does not successfully get
the point across. The thesis of the paper needs to be clearer and not in the form of a question.

of identity theft, but does not clearly identify the problem. The author needs to be more specific
and not be so informal in writing. Avoid using first person I, you, me, us. Writing in third person
sounds more professional and is more academically accepted. Argument: The author tries to
persuade the reader using logical arguments and by referencing other sources, however, because the
writer tries to insert herself into the paper and make it more personal, she does not appear to be
credible. Instead of saying "I read this article on this website," the author should write something
like: "According to The New York Times, "В¦." Counterargument: None Development: Length of

grammar, organization, and formatting. Needs work on

I encourage you to become a peer tutor student. Tutoring is helping a student help him/herself to the
point that they have become independent You'll learn so much about other students and it will help
you mature. Not only will becoming a peer tutor help you grow as a student yourself but it is an
easy way to boost your GPA and will look pretty impressive on a resume. Many students have
learning disabilities that prevent them from learning at higher paces as other students but with the
right practice they can become as independent as others. In your peer tutoring class room that is
assigned to you will do more than just tutor the students. Some days the assigned teacher will send

Fellow students of Columbia State Community College; are you struggling in a subject, but it is
hard to ask the teacher for help? Well fear no longer: Speedy
Tutors offers an anonymous peer to peer tutoring system. Simply come to the designated building,
fill out the information card, and enter it into the terminal provided. From there the data will be used
to find a "match" for the student. Which matches the student with someone who can not only help
them in their subject, but the student can also help the other party in a subject they are struggling
in. Not only does Speedy Tutors offer a way to communicate with people, but it paves the way for
many other options as well. People could continue seeing each–other after their first tutoring session

Setting the stage, is the useful thing about the system. The actual upsides of having a fellow peer
tutor you in a subject. In an anonymous survey conducted on SurveyMonkey.com, seven out of
fourteen people said they would prefer to be tutored by a peer over a professor. With this service
the aim is to do just that, to bring tutoring to a peer to peer experience instead of a normal peer to
professor experience. With this the goal is to make it easier for students to learn in a friendlier
environment instead of a more judgmental or stricter environment that sometimes comes from
tutoring from a professor.
Secondly, is the possibility of creating a new friendship from the program.
With this program you receive the anonymous student's phone number which allows you to keep in
touch with them past the first tutoring session, however this is only done with the students consent.
If the student would like to remain anonymous and keep their phone number private, we will contact
them with a location and time to meet their tutor. We encourage meeting other students

Markville's Peer Tutoring Club, I vowed to assure those who struggle in similar circumstances

my aspiration to become a peer tutor in 2015. Throughout the years, I found myself tutoring

enforcing a relationship between two disagreeing parties is a violation of respect and empathy. This
year, Peer Tutoring introduced a new 1–on–1 program where a tutee is designated a specific tutor for
every session to better suit the tutees' personal needs. A student failing in areas of mathematics
was assigned under my care due to the reliable attributes I possess. I knew that unfamiliarity was

13. Online Learning Log Analysis
I especially admire how it is suggested that in our virtual campus we do not need to get dressed,
hire a babysitter, drive to class, find a parking space, go to class to earn a degree (Bethel, 2014,
p.4). However, we do have to put in time to read our material that is provided to us (READ
section), watch a video in our ATTEND section, complete our assignments and communicate with
our fellow classmates. Just because we are not being present in a classroom we still have to do the
work to earn our grades. The best tip from our Read section, I think, is to pay attention to word
count requirements and also to treat the Discuss forum with seriousness because it is apart of our
academic learning. I always copy and paste assignment instructions into Google Doc to begin my
thinking, research, writing and proofreading. Making time to read and do the assignments is
another great tip I am going to use. Planning out a specific time and place for me to adhere to my
online learning schedule is how I will apply this and make myself be aware of my time being used
with the thought of working towards my goals.

because it is something we learn. I try to refer to the Purdue/OWL website to help me sometimes.

14. What Are The Pros And Cons Of Gene Editing?
The ability to edit human embryos is relatively new to science. For this reason, the pros and cons of
gene editing are being debated, and it's not yet clear whether or not the potential good of modifying
DNA outweighs the potential hazards. Assuming thorough testing, safe application, and observations
taken for generations, the potential good that could come from being able to edit human embryos
would outweigh the potential hazards.
CRISPR/Cas9, a system of molecules used to change the DNA in adult human cells and animal
embryos, is used to eradicate devastating genetic diseases in humans before birth. CRISPR
identifies the target DNA, which shows Cas9 the correct strands to slice ("CRISPR Treats Genetic
Disorder", 2016). This process has...show more content...
As long as all aspects and possible outcomes are weighed, experiments are well thought out and
calculated, and scientists are educated in the possibilities of gene editing technology, then what
cons outweigh potential pros from a scientific standpoint? But then, how can ethics be determined
when everyone in the world has diverse values? These experiments depend on the scientists
performing them and how they weigh the pros and cons of gene editing. In summary, there is no
right answer to how far scientists can go with editing embryos; they are only limited by their values
and the general beliefs and restrictions in their countries. Gene editing will continue to be debated,
and if a point of agreement is reached, then it will be clear whether or not the pros really outweigh–
the cons of modifying DNA in human

15. How My Writing Has Changed Essay
My writing styles have changed drastically over the past four years of high school. This memo will
explain how my writing has changed and how my knowledge of writing has improved.
Aspects of My Writing during High School
During my English courses throughout high school, I learned many things from writing simple
journals, research papers, and a single term paper. During high school, I was laid back and
procrastinated for much of my work. During the latter part of high school when I wrote my term
paper my senior year, I found out that working a little every night writing a few paragraphs helped
me out greatly. I was not just throwing something together just to get the grade and the paper
finished. I spent time on the paper and...show more content...
I do this so the information is true, and also in order from which events have occurred. When I
wrote my term paper my senior year I was well organized. I was required to write about an event
in history. I chose India Uprising of 1877 as the topic of my paper. This topic was not interesting at
all, but I chose to write about it. When I finished writing my thesis and outline, I wrote note cards
about the different topics, which allowed me to gather all my information and organize it in which
different events occurred. When I was finished with the paper, it sounded and read consistently and it
all flowed together.
How These Experiences Prepared Me for College Writing
I have written many different types of papers for all of my classes throughout high school. For
my science classes, I have written several labs in the form of essays. Writing the essays was
different for me because I did not really know that science had much to do with writing. It took me
a while to gather all the information I needed to finish my lab assignments. Writing lab reports will
definitely help me in my science courses in the next four years.
The journals I have written came from my four years of high school English. Everyday I came to
class there would be a topic on the board. I took five minutes each day to write about the given
topic. It was brainstorming and giving our input on whatever the topic was. I think

16. Genome Editing Essay
Introduction
Genome editing is a huge leap forward in science and medicine. Because of recent advances in
technology, the study of genes and induced 'point' mutations have led to the discovery and
advancement of methods previously used in order to mutate genes. The development of Clusters
of Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPRs) and CRISPR associated system 9
protein (Cas9) technology is a hugely significant leap forward as this is a tool that could potentially
be used for the research into and hopefully the treatment of a range of medical conditions that are
genetically related. Cystic fibrosis (Schwank, G. et al, 2013), haemophilia and sickle cell disease are
an example of some of the conditions that have the...show more content...
Once the complex was bound to the DNA, a cut would be made to eliminate and destroy the
invaders. 83% of archaeal genomes and 45% of bacterial genomes (Shabbir, M. et al, 2016) were
shown to be able to successfully utilize the CRISPR Cas9 system. These are very promising
statistics, so it is no wonder that there has been such an advancement in the past few years to bring
this technology to eukaryotic cells, mammalian cells and eventually human cells.
With the rate and volume that new experiments and experimental procedures are being tried and
tested, it can be expected that a Nobel Prize will soon be won for the discovery and advancement of
this potential life–saving 'tool'. The category of Nobel Prize and who it potentially should be
awarded to are discussed later in this essay.
The Role of CRISPR/Cas9 as a Genome Editing Tool
There are three types of CRISPR systems. The Type II CRISPR system (where the interface is
mediated by a single large protein in conjunction with crRNA) is the simplest of the three and it is
this one that has been the basis for genome editing.
The Cas9 protein is an enzyme that effectively acts as a pair of molecular 'scissors', cutting

17. Essay On Tutoring Experience
Since beginning my peer tutoring placement I have performed new and unique tasks on a daily
basis. At the start of the semester I primarily circulated the classroom explaining concepts to students
and answering their questions. As the semester progressed my activities have been refined to be
more efficient and effective at helping individual students. With the assistance of Ms. Randle I have
been able to pinpoint individual students that would benefit the most from my assistance. These
students all have unique individual needs that I try to fine–tune my assistance to accommodate. I
constantly strive to better understand each individual's learning skills.
One example of a way I accommodate a certain student is by reading and writing for him. Early in
the semester, it was noticed that this student struggled to get work done. This was not due to a lack
of understanding but instead due to issues writing down his ideas and reading the material. Ms.
Randle recommended that I focus my attention primarily on him as he needed the most one–on–one
help of all the students in the class. Additionally, it was noted that without my assistance he was in
jeopardy of failing the class.

When working with Aaron, I can understand how sometimes Mike felt more like a social worker

me questions that are personal. I don't mind when he does so, but sometimes I feel more like a
mentor or social worker than a tutor. I enjoy helping him outside of school because he is only a
freshman and it is nice to have a different point of view sometimes. Rose showed me how it is
okay to sometimes set aside school and talk about personal topics and to help them for the future.
Also, while tutoring at Christel House Academy, I was able to relate how students sometimes are
categorized rather than fostered to learn more. Struggling students, like Aaron, aren't getting the
available assistance they need to perform well in school. Because of the categorization, Aaron's
grade are low, he is placed with others that are struggling, and is defined as academically challenged
by the institution. However, by tutoring and working with him to find different ways to teach him
will benefit how he learns in school. Overall, I had an amazing tutoring experience with Aaron and I

20. My Video Editing Experience
A long time I decided to live the zombie life as a video editor and during that time I had to
experience a lot of workflow to get good at it. In the beginning of learning it was difficult and
there were so many different programs to edit with, but during the time I did not know about
which were professional or not. For example, when I first started I used a program called Window
Movie Maker, and without doubt it was not very useful since there were only limited tools that the
program holds; Since I did not know any better at the time I easily continued to work with the
program for a couple months, which was the most difficult start of my experience. For example,
there were obstacles such as slow render, 15 effects or less, and very rigid transitions from clips to
clips. When it came to actual editing, I was amateurish as well, but that's normal for anyone that's
new to a hobby that they want to learn by experience; The way I synched the lyrics or beats to my
clips were off at first, as well as the quality, which was poor. In fact, I did not even know how to
discover a source to download the type of footage I worked with at the time. After 3 or 4 months
of editing, I finally made my first friend that does the same hobby as me, and he then helped me
locate high quality clips. My friend was from Germany and of course I was from the United States,
so we both helped each other grow as editors as time passed, even as it was difficult we had fun
