1. Hearing Loss and Aging
Aging is an inevitable part of life. It’s something that we cannot change nor avoid, as
sooner or later each and every one of us will grow old. As we grow old we’re most likely to
experience changes in our body. For instance, some of our organs won’t function as well as they
used to, while our stamina won’t be as good as they are today.
Our hearing also gets affected when we age. There are tiny hair cells in our ear that helps
us hear by picking up sound waves and shifting them into the nerve signals that the brain
interprets as sound. Hearing loss occurs when these cells died or are damaged.
Although not threatening, Presbycusis can still greatly impact our lives. It is a form of
hearing loss that usually occurs to individuals as they grow older. This condition makes it hard to
hear high-pitched sounds like the ringing of the telephone or the chirping of the birds.
Some of the causes of age-related hearing loss are the following:
• Family history
• Constant exposure to loud sounds
• Diabetes and other medical conditions
• Chemotherapy drugs, used for cancer, and other kinds of medicine
• Smoking
• Gradual changes in the inner ear
• Abnormalities in the outer ear
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for age-related hearing loss yet. This is the reason
why it is advisable for anymore suffering from this kind of hearing condition to get hearing aids.
What’s more, there are other practices you can do to make life a lot better for those affected by
these conditions. Here are some of those treatments:
• The use of assistive devices, like telephone amplifiers
• Lip reading
• Using visual aids whenever communicating with the person
• Sign language education for those who have severe hearing loss
• Cochlear implant, also for those with severe hearing loss
