The Polis Center at IUPUI describes local applications and success stories using FEMA's Hazus-MH. Hazus-MH is a GIS-based software that estimates the physical, economic and social impacts of disasters.
2. Hazus-MH Improves Mitigation
Johnson County, Indiana
Polis modeled a Hazus 100-year flood scenario (Figure A) and compared it to a historical 2008 flood scenario (Figure
B) modeled by the county GIS department.

3. Good Input = Good Output
Hazus-MH Analysis
1,503 buildings damaged
$45 million in building
losses
Historical Analysis
1,392 buildings damaged
$58 million in building
damages
The comparison exercise in Johnson County demonstrated how inputting
local data results in accurate results.
4. Hazus is Flexible
You can use Hazus-MH to estimate
losses at a regional level, e.g.
watershed analyses for Risk MAP
5. Hazus is Flexible
You can use Hazus-MH to estimate
losses at a sub-county level, e.g.
campus analyses for a Disaster
