understanding to better contribute to creating democratic

An international organization that provides learning opportunities for personal
and professional development. We are a community of educators who care
about education and democratic culture for living and working together.
Democracy
Democracy is much broader than a special political form, a method of conducting
government, of making laws and carrying on governmental administration… It is that,
of course. But it is something broader and deeper than that. It is… a way of life,
social and individual.
The key-note of democracy as a way of life may be
expressed as the necessity for the participation of
every mature human being in formation of the values
that regulate the living of men together

Cards for Democracy for all
Cards for Democracy for All
are a set of 60 cards intended
for all individuals, on their
own and in groups.
The cards help to reflect on
our intention, and to nurture a
disposition to examine
and improve our attitudes,
skills, knowledge and
understanding to better
contribute to creating
democratic spaces
They help improve our
practices and behaviors for co-
constructing a more just and
happy society.

How were they created?
60 educators (teachers, professors, school-heads…) collaborated for some 6 years to develop
learning activities that help nurture a democratic environment. We realized that whether the
topic, whether it was teaching history, civics, language etc. There was a core set of learning
outcomes that were the same in each area. We decided to work on finding what these core
elements were.
Once we had found the core competences, we set of to identify what observables behaviors
we could engage in that would show that we possess the competences => the cards are the
behaviors we can display do in different contexts.
Gamification, self-learning
A tool apt for learning through games and aiming to help people be active citizens capable of
contributing to shape a more democratic society. We show some ways and give you some tips
on how to use the cardsC

the car and park it; Attitudes supporting safety of all and, for example, avoiding road rage.

These components are all weaved
together. Democratic values and
competences cannot be acquired
through formal teaching alone but
need to be practiced. They are
acquired through a “learning by
doing” approach, based on
experience.
This can be achieved through
continuous professional
development for educators willing
and able to try innovative actions
in their school and classrooms.
C4D have been found to be helpful
for developing intercultural and
democratic competences.

outcomes for a lesson or a training
• Example: inclusive critical pedagogy

Learning from conflict …in schools
A true story
Sam, a 16 year old pupil of the vocational school in grade 11, used to joke around with one
other pupil, of this class, Leon, in such a way that he pretended to be hitting him in his private
parts. That is, he made this sudden movement but never actually touched him.
Leon, more and more annoyed by this behavior, went to his friends and told them that he
believed that ‘Jerry is gay’.
So, during breaktime one of these friends, Jo, went to Sam and said to him: "I hear you’re gay
and you like doing thing to boys!"
At which point Sam saw red and started a physical fight.
Other's from the class intervened and stopped them from fighting.
The teacher convenes all to an activity with the cards:
A conflict is an opportunity to learn… supported by the use of the Cards for Democracy:
here each protagonist is given a card
that corresponds to possible reflections linked to their behavior during the conflict

Assessment
Learners (student, trainees) are asked to chose a card for democracy
They write themselves a letter concerning the way they relate to this card.
At several points in the
journey (a semester for
example), learners are
invited to come and
reflect on their cards
and take notes in a
template of a
silhouette.
Action Plan:
learners are invited to write down their plan of action on how they are going to
reach their desired aim as the democratic person they want to become
• Draw your hand
– Write your aim in the
middle of the hand
• My aim is to …
– Write 5 routes to your
aim (one in each finger)
and time the routes in
your finger tips. A route
is something I can do
such as training, reading,
reflecting, writing,
encountering etc.

  • 6. How were they created? 60 educators (teachers, professors, school-heads…) collaborated for some 6 years to develop learning activities that help nurture a democratic environment. We realized that whether the topic, whether it was teaching history, civics, language etc. There was a core set of learning outcomes that were the same in each area. We decided to work on finding what these core elements were. Once we had found the core competences, we set of to identify what observables behaviors we could engage in that would show that we possess the competences => the cards are the behaviors we can display do in different contexts.

  • 11. These components are all weaved together. Democratic values and competences cannot be acquired through formal teaching alone but need to be practiced. They are acquired through a “learning by doing” approach, based on experience. This can be achieved through continuous professional development for educators willing and able to try innovative actions in their school and classrooms.   • 17. Planning and designing • The cards can be used as expected learning outcomes for a lesson or a training • Example: inclusive critical pedagogy

Prevention of violence and discrimination Learning from conflict …in schools A true story Sam, a 16 year old pupil of the vocational school in grade 11, used to joke around with one other pupil, of this class, Leon, in such a way that he pretended to be hitting him in his private parts. That is, he made this sudden movement but never actually touched him. Leon, more and more annoyed by this behavior, went to his friends and told them that he believed that ‘Jerry is gay’. So, during breaktime one of these friends, Jo, went to Sam and said to him: "I hear you’re gay and you like doing thing to boys!" At which point Sam saw red and started a physical fight. Other's from the class intervened and stopped them from fighting. The teacher convenes all to an activity with the cards:
  • 19. A conflict is an opportunity to learn… supported by the use of the Cards for Democracy: here each protagonist is given a card that corresponds to possible reflections linked to their behavior during the conflict

  • 24. Learners (student, trainees) are asked to chose a card for democracy They write themselves a letter concerning the way they relate to this card.
  • 25. At several points in the journey (a semester for example), learners are invited to come and reflect on their cards and take notes in a template of a silhouette.
  • 26. Action Plan: learners are invited to write down their plan of action on how they are going to reach their desired aim as the democratic person they want to become • Draw your hand – Write your aim in the middle of the hand • My aim is to … – Write 5 routes to your aim (one in each finger) and time the routes in your finger tips. A route is something I can do such as training, reading, reflecting, writing, encountering etc.
