What does “Classical” mean? • From 1750 on artists, musicians, and architects wanted to get away from the complexity of the Baroque period and replicate the clean, uncluttered style of Classical Greece. • This period is called Classical because of that desire to resemble the works of the ancient Greeks.
Classical Characteristics • Great attention to musical form -Balance • Use of percussion instruments • Simple music • Opera • Use of comic and witty melodies
The Piano • Hammered strings • Louder than harpsichord • Pedals

Instruments of the Classical Period • Modern Flute • Clarinet • French Horn • Valved Trumpet • Trombone • Percussion • Piano
Symphonic Style • An extended work for orchestra - usually 20 - 40 minutes in length. • Usually contains 3 or 4 movements which contrast each other. • In a four movement symphony the order usually is a fanfare type or fast opening movement, followed by a slower movement. The third movement is usually a dance, and the final movement is fast.

Classical Period Pt 1

  • 2. What does “Classical” mean? • From 1750 on artists, musicians, and architects wanted to get away from the complexity of the Baroque period and replicate the clean, uncluttered style of Classical Greece. • This period is called Classical because of that desire to resemble the works of the ancient Greeks.

  • 4. Classical Characteristics • Great attention to musical form -Balance • Use of percussion instruments • Simple music • Opera • Use of comic and witty melodies
  • 5. The Piano • Hammered strings • Louder than harpsichord • Pedals
  • 7. Instruments of the Classical Period • Modern Flute • Clarinet • French Horn • Valved Trumpet • Trombone • Percussion • Piano

  • 11. Symphonic Style • An extended work for orchestra - usually 20 - 40 minutes in length. • Usually contains 3 or 4 movements which contrast each other. • In a four movement symphony the order usually is a fanfare type or fast opening movement, followed by a slower movement. The third movement is usually a dance, and the final movement is fast.
