I am in China as a guest of the Chinese government May 20- June 2 lecturing to students and faculty at 3 universities. This is what I will be sharing- how I taught then and now.
1. By baby sitting my 3 year old niece for only 6
exhausting hours so Mom and Dad could go to a
movie on Saturday afternoon
3. Rural town of about 24,000.
Main employers are Fort Hays State University
and the regional medial hospital.
My typical class has 9-14 students, most are from
rural communities. Many come from towns of less
that 1000, or less than 300!!
Many of my students, male and female, hunt.
Many ride horses and drive tractors.
Almost all FHSU students work part time.
4. Kansas is flat, hot in the summer (100+) and snow in the
winter. The wind is ALWAYS blowing. Kansas is developing
wind powered energy on wind farms.
5. Our back yard faces a cattle
ranch. Here I am with one of our
neighbors!
8. This giant piece of hail
put a hole in the top of my
convertible car.
Insurance paid for it.
$1700
The storm approaching!
9.
10. Tractors are run by GPS, allowing
this fellow to get on his iPhone.
11. My wife is Yaprak.
Yaprak.
We met in Turkey when I
worked there and married
in 1990. Yaprak means
“leaf” in Turkish. I call her
Miss Leaf!
She too has a doctorate
and is Assistant Professor
of Education at FHSU.
At Yaprak’s graduation
ceremony for her doctorate.
12. Our cat, Mavish. He has
one blue eye and one
hazel eye. He’s
handsome, and he knows
it!
Mavish is a Turkish word
for ‘like the color blue’.
Mavish
Other Turkish names we
considered included –
Snowflake and Polar
Bear.
Polar Bear
13. And now for my story,
followed by some thoughts on
how I have changed over
time……
By baby sitting my 3 year old niece for only 6 exhausting
hours so Mom and Dad could go to a movie on Saturday
afternoon in Houston, Texas
15. We played three games on my iPad,
beginning with Angry Birds. Then
I realized I had an app on my
iPhone to read Dr. Seuss. So out
came the iPhone for a read with
the Dr Seuss- auto play, read to
Me and read it myself. My niece
intuitively knew how to flip the
pages with the swipe of her finger.
She asked me a question
only when she got stuck.
16. We went outside and
learned not to pull flowers
off the plants. A bit of hands
on learning and
experimentation
and making mistakes.
17. Then we went fishing with our
poles. Hers is seen in the
photo. We learned about frogs,
that they like to sit on the pads
and then we experienced
mosquitoes and retreated
indoors.
18. I turned on the TV and we
watched about 5 minutes
of the Disney movie Cats
and Dogs before she
became bored.
19. So we then played with some
“real” cats. She found the
toys and had fun for about 10
minutes.
21. Continuing the imaginative
creativity theme, the “rabbit
people” came alive for
hours of conversational fun.
At the beginning of the fun,
both rabbits had two ears.
She went to the market to
buy some carrots, we
discussed hopping vs
walking, and then they got
very tired and….
22. So she built a rabbit
house and a bed with our
100 plus year old Turkish
embroidery so they could
sleep.
24. With the rabbit people
sleeping she decided we had
to be silent and so we went
outside to let them sleep.
Here is where we played
sidewalk art together for over
an hour. Pictured here is fairy
dust, a butterfly, an airplane,
flowers and kite flying on the
beach.
And we designed new
colored rocks and drew on
the trees.
She asked about the
butterflies she had seen a
month ago.
25. And now for a serious reflection on
university student learning at Forth
Hays State University
What can we note about adult learning from my 6 hour
exhausting babysitting role?
Yes! Here I am in Balikpapan,
Indonesia teaching the
offshore oil worker English for
the oil business. About 1980.
I am the center of attention.
They listen, take notes.
27. Now- Laptops, wifi and teams
Every class period students use
their laps and the internet. The
campus is wifi.
They work individually, in pairs
and on teams.
Why do you think they like this
approach to learning?
28. Now- You Tube
Why do I use
it? What do I
use it for? Why
do you think
students like my
channel?
29. Now- Text from a student
Donovan
30. Now- Texting- Even for a
business
Hays
Darrel.
!
31. Now- Twitter
Twitter
My twitter feed is called
NextGenBizComm, short for
Next Generation Business
Communication
32. Now- Twitter
I tweet links to podcasts I made for
my courses. Students listen to them
before class so they are ready to
begin the latest group activities
during class time. I do not lecture
very often in class.
。
33. Now- Twitter
I also tweet links to articles I have
find in online newspapers and
journals.
How do you think my students react?
35. Now- Microblog/Weibo
FHSU on microblog
(like Twitter), the
most influential
social media in
China
Twitter) ,
36. Now- Presentations before the class
While their colleagues were
presenting, these guys were on
FaceBook and texting!
38. Now- Twitter and Google Drive spreadsheets
Using Google Drive, I ask all the classes to go up and fill in a spreadsheet their
name, class, the twitter link I sent out and then tell everyone what they learned from
the article.
39. Now- Twitter, Google Drive spreadsheets, and student
learnings
40. Now- Audio Podcasts
I have a free podcasting channel,
Next Gen Learning. I know that 3 of
9 students have listened to this
6.47 minute broadcast for a course
called BUED. Chapter 11 was
about program evaluation. This is a
teacher education course on
curriculum development
NextGen Learning.
41. Now- Audio Podcasts
I myself follow 42 other podcasting
channels for fun. 15 students are
following me. Surprisingly 56
people have listened to my podcast
on how to write a business report.
I also podcast out about what I will
put on my quizzes and exams! 25
smart students have listened to this
one!
42. Now- Audio Podcasts
And here is a podcast from China
from one graduate MBA student
(Graduate Teaching Assistant) to
help incoming GTAs prepare for
their experience at Sias.
43. Possible questions to consider
Students today are very
techie. Many grow up with a
tablet or smart phone- how
will that impact society? For
the better or for the worse?
Me, in Bangkok, 1980s.
What about the age gap in
use of technology? And
how does that impact
society?
