Picture (Me and my lovely mother)I work for Frontline Fellowship(@frontfellow) as their IT Manager, I committed my life to the Lord when I was 15 years old at a church conference in Brooklyn that my dad was part of. Went a bit wayward after then but thanks to the irresistible grace of God, He brought me back to my senses (Luke 15:3-7 parable of the lost sheep). That’s enough about me though, you can connect with us (FF) on facebook and twitter. For those of you that like visual media we are on youtube and flickr too.
In Matthew 28 Jesus Himslef gives us the Great Commission, to go and make disciples. We are to evangelise and also to make sure that all converts are properly discipled.
Although nothing can replace evangelism and discipleship in real life with the actual person, the use of social media can improve and further evangelism and discipleship. It gives us another platform to reach many more people with the good news.
Some people may be against the idea of online evangelism. I can say one thing, it is shameful if you are using Social Media for your own personal reasons but not use it to bring glory to God and to further His kingdom. We must be witnesses wherever we are including online.
Stats Updated June 2011In the top visited US websites Facebook is ranked the highest (yes, even higher than Google) it also is the highest search term globally with nearly 3 times more searches than the 2nd ranked search term “youtube”. Facebook takes up in a variation of search terms, four different spots on the list of top 10 searches globally (1. facebook, 3. Facebook login, 5. Facebook.com, 8. www.facebook.com). Youtube featuring twice (2. Youtube and 10. You tube)It is clear when we look at statistics like this that the amount of time spent online and particularly on social media is enormous. Using our social presence online to further the gospel is definitely worth while.
There are three methods of online evangelism that I believe everything can be summed up into. Some people would be comfortable and are the type of people that will use all methods but others might not use them all. We need to point people to the cross, the only way of salvation is through Jesus. (John 14:6, Acts 4:12, Romans 6:23)
The conversational method is almost identical to your traditional door to door / marketplace evangelism. What you are aiming to do here is speak to people you usually converse with directly about the gospel and to evangelise to them using social media platforms relying on 2 way conversation. Using posts and statuses like passive evangelism which I will explain next can be a useful way to start conversations by asking questions like are you a good person? Are you going to heaven? Etc. using methods like this will encourage discussion. We are to go out there and make disciples of all the nations when we are online we should be doing it just as we are supposed to be doing it offline. (Matthew 28:18-20, Matthew 9:37-38, Romans 10:14 – on the page)
This method is basically to reach people without directly conversing with them, for example tweeting on twitter(your status on facebook, a video on youtube, etc) about certain issues, scriptures, links to other gospel media, etc. this way you are expecting a certain person, group of people and/or your entire following to see.
We are called to be salt and light(Matthew 5:13-14 – on page). We are to conduct ourselves as Christians in an appropriate manner online and offline. We are in this world but we are not of this world (John 15:19, John 17:14, James 1:27, 1 John 2:15, James 4:4). Just by looking at our conduct online people should be able to tell us apart from the rest of the world.
Group activity on ideas to use these methods effectively (to make sure everyone understands the ideas discussed) with each group leader presenting the groups plan of action. (show how also getting fellow Christian friends and working together making a plan can also help witness by having input from more people on the same topic)
