NC State’s Strategic Vision states that our core value is to transform lives and improve the human condition through strategic research and scholarship. We’ll take a look at what NC State is contributing to society as a result of the research that’s carried out here. Then we’ll talk about how we’re benchmarking our progress and the research strategies we’re implementing to increase our impact. One of the ways we can measure our impact to date is by taking a look at third-party rankings. We’ll look at overall University rankings by US News and World Report and specific research rankings by The Center for Measuring University Performance. This gives us a snapshot of “Where We Are Today.” And then we’ll talk about where we want to go and how we're going to get there.

- One of our overarching initiatives is our recently launched Research Gateway. We’ve built out an online gateway to serve our internal research community, our external partners, and a “Visitors” section with feature stories, statistics, and impressive facts to begin building our reputation and increasing the profile of our Research and Graduate Studies enterprise at NC State.
- And we’re providing tools and resources to support these Strategic Research Areas. We’ve built out areas of the Research Gateway to include portals for each of our Strategic Research Areas. We’ve developed these pages toprovide Links, Features, Networking Opportunities and Resources for team science. These portals also promote NC State as “real-world team scientists” externally. This is an example of our Health and Well-being portal.
- So if we drill down into the Medical Treatments and Tools area, you’ll see that you can take an even closer look at NC State’s expertise. Growing out of each first-level cluster, we’ve identified even more specific research strengths. For example, the layer under “Devices & Materials” includes Robotics, Nano, Tissue Engineering, etc. This mapping system organizes NC State’s areas of expertise in Health and Well-Being into something quite manageable.
- And for even more detail, let’s drill down further into the clusters and look at “who’s doing what” in each of these areas. So if we looked into this “e-Records” area, we can see that Laurie Williams and Mladen Vouk are currently working on Electronic Medical Records.
- The “Health Games” area includes researchers Michael Young and Time Buie working on Serious Games.
- And the FDA Categories area shows that Troy Nagle is focusing on “Cost Saving Medical Technologies.” So as you can see, we’re quite busy identifying and organizing our best research into multidisciplinary structures so that we can work together to solve real-world problems.
