Reading comprehension improves when readers actively engage with text by making connections, asking questions, making inferences, and analyzing relationships. There are three levels of reading comprehension: literal involves stated facts; interpretive involves implied meanings and inferences; and applied involves analyzing and synthesizing information. Becoming an active reader through slowing down, rereading difficult parts, monitoring comprehension, and knowing the reading purpose can improve reading comprehension skills.
