was Ares, god of war. He was also known as Mars in Roman mythology. Even though he was born
in Thrace, Ares spent most of his time on Mount Olympus because he was one of the Twelve

This is where mortals would spend the afterlife. The Underworld is the setting to some of Greek
Mythology's most notorious myths. A prime example of this would be the story of Orpheus and
Eurydice. There are different areas of the Underworld, and how you behaved as a mortal

When the quarter started, I wrote that I had very little knowledge of Greek mythology outside of
Disney's Hercules, or bits and pieces that explained themselves in the context of modern day culture.
It wasn't that Greek mythology wasn't a subject that interested me; I had just never been given the
opportunity to learn, and the longer I waited to learn, the more self–conscience I became when
admitting I had no clue about a subject that was to relevant to my major. Luckily, I finally received

lion. A prime example is the Nemean lion. This lion was vicious and could not be hurt by bronze

has the body of a lion but the head and wings of an eagle. It is especially known to guard treasure.

the Minotaur, Medusa, and centaurs appear to be partially human. The Minotaur, for example, has
the head of a bull but the body of a man. He was born as the offspring of Minos's wife and a
beautiful bull sent by Poseidon. However, Minos's wife was forced to love the bull by Poseidon. On

Additionally, it is even more fascinating that not only do Greek Gods act like human; they also

The word Mythology comes from the Greek word mythos for 'story – of – the – people', and logos
for 'word' or 'speech'. It is defined as the study and interpretation of myths which are a collection of
sacred tales and stories which usually deal with human condition, good and evil, human origins, life
and death, the afterlife and the Gods (Mark, 2009). These myths are according to Campbell (1991)
clues to the spiritual potentialities of the human life. By interpreting these myths, Mythology tries to
answer the most difficult and the most basic questions of human existence (Mark, 2009). Myths

However, there is no formal criteria that exists in defining what an academic discipline is. Currently,
the Academic Disciplines are only grouped together if they have something in common which are
not present with the other subjects.
The Academic Disciplines which will be the focus of the study will only include; Art, Literature,
Religion, Philosophy, Psychology and the Natural Sciences. Disciplines which are too focused on a
specific theme are excluded as it will be hard for some readers to relate. As such, the disciplines

Since the beginning of time the people of the world have their share of beliefs. Greek mythology
is the arguably the most popular region of study. In Ancient Greece every citizen had a patron that
would protect them and pantheism was commonplace. The Romans admired the Greeks in their art
and culture and even took different aspects of their gods. Polytheism was widely accepted in all

The Importance Of Mythology In Literature
Mythology has been at the center of every civilization; humans have been relying on myth to explain
religion, history, and morality. Literature evolved from myth and employs similar motifs; authors
have often appropriated mythology to create allegories, metaphors, and analogies in their works.
Exploring the relationship between these mediums attracted my attention. Throughout the first half
of the course, we've been exploring the campus, examining the haibun form, and discussing how
certain events have been mythologized in modern day. Our focus has been on discovering this
relationship through doing, which has not been the most conducive learning experience for me, yet
the benefits cannot be denied. Arriving on campus was an overwhelming experience: new people,
new places, new country. The change was jarring at times; however, exploring the campus made
the situation less disorienting and more manageably, in the process I've discovered study spaces
besides the noisy cacophony of College Library and hidden gems in campus buildings. The myths
of our university have added a new layer to my experience here, invoking a certain allure –– haunted
halls, age–old graduation traditions, pre–exam good luck charms –– all revealing the true character
of the campus; giving me more reasons to enjoy it. Yet, exploring the city and learning the folklore
would have been more gratifying activities without the pressure of them being assignments, rather a
natural part of moving to a new place.
