film taking place in the setting of the Civil War, where characters had to make an effort everyday
to survive, like Johnny was having to do after the church fire. Johnny's understanding of why this
had happened to him was long gone, he knew why he did it, and that his love for his brothers was

of them or the gang together would have to risk themselves to save another. Greasers hated the
Socs and vice versa. That is what Ponyboy talked about. Ponyboy told the story, he either did it in
his journal or told it in first person limited, which was through his eyes or how it all went down for

book, you cannot see what is happening so in between dialogue breaks, it would pause and he would

Although Gone With the Wind is a novel deeply absorbed with the psyche of its heroine, Scarlett
O'Hara, Scarlett herself absolutely lacks awareness of both her own desires as well as the true
natures of those around her. Seen through a Freudian lens, Gone With the Wind depicts a
dangerously repressive society turned breeding ground for a widespread inability to comprehend the
subconscious that mechanizes the tragedy of the novel. However, although Gone With the Wind is
deeply rooted in a Freudian tradition of psychoanalysis, it offers more well rounded and in places

Despite the severe gender inequality of their time, women in Gone with the Wind show strength and
intelligence that equals or bests the strength and intelligence of men. Scarlett is cunning, and
manipulates men with ease. She runs Tara when her father falls ill, and eventually realizes that she
has a better head for business than most men. She becomes a very successful mill owner, running
every aspect of the business and putting her weak, incompetent husband to shame. Melanie, although
she is a subdued figure, exhibits increasing strength as the novel progresses, and she eventually
emerges as the novel's strongest female character. She provides much of Scarlett's strength, although
Scarlett realizes this only at the end of the novel. Melanie also protects Ashley from the world he

In the novel Scarlett has a son named Wade, with Charles Hamilton. There is no mention of Wade
in the film. In the movie and the novel, Charles dies of pneumonia while fighting in the Civil War,
leaving Scarlett as a widow at the age of seventeen. Her biggest concern at that time is not being

The novel also showcases the Confederates as noble; I mean I guess fighting alongside your brothers
of war could possibly be seen as noble to some. But to me, fighting to keep something as evil as

Reading Response #5 The general setting in this story is around the 1940s, or early 1950s, in
Georgia (14). The story consist of traveling as well. The story does not give any specific timeline
of the year, but it can be interpreted as the 1940s because of various little hints. One hint I found

This movie shows all of the horrible things that are incorporated with war, in excruciating detail.
At one point in the movie Scarlet has to witness a man get his leg amputated with no anesthesia,
or anything for pain at all due to lack of funds, and lack of ability to get the medicines that were
necessary. The accuracy of the film though is somewhat biased. The book was written by a
southern woman, and frankly I'm sure had some resentment towards the North, she wrote this
book glamorizing the South and making the North look horrendous. They were fighting to free
slaves, whereas the South wanted to keep their slaves. The movie for the most part only seems to
portray slaves with kind master and the truth of the matter is, no matter how good and kind the
master was, the black people were slaves. They were considered property and as such, could be
bought, sold, used and abused, and treated like cattle, not people. The slaves were not free. They
had no legal rights, because they were not a person under the law. Their "owners" had complete
control of their lives. They were not free to go anywhere or do anything without their master's
approval. The master had the right to separate husband and wife, parents and children. It was very

How the 1930's could have turned out to be positive instead of a negative. The difficult decade for
many Americans was the 1930s. Knol Beta stated that "the Great Depression plagued citizens
throughout the country because of lost jobs and a poor economy." Although there wasn't very much
money left to be spent on nice items, Americans still turned to entertainment to remind themselves
life is only what you make it. One of the greatest things to come out of the Great Depression was the

As an African–American, the only thing that bothered me the most was that the African–American
actors didn't receive leading roles but supporting roles. Hollywood was not interested in making
positive image movies about African–Americans because they saw them as "risky" undertakings. So
because of that the major roles available to black actors were maids, walk–ons, butlers, servants, or
comics.
When it came to male gender roles in the film, because of the Great Depression, Harry M.
Benshoff and Sean Griffin in America on Film: Representing Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality
at the Movies stated that, "men were becoming emasculated due to the inability to provide for
their families as they wanted." Men were generally portrayed as more violent and abusive toward
women for that reason. There's a scene in Gone with the Wind when Rhett and Scarlett get into a
heated fight and they show Scarlett fighting back and then Rhett taking her against her will. When

Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell was the American author who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937 for her
immensely successful novel, Gone with the Wind, that was published in 1936. She was born in
Atlanta, Georgia, and often used the name Peggy. Her childhood was spent on the laps of Civil War
veterans and of her mother's relatives who lived through the war and the years that followed. They
told her everything about the war, except that the Confederates had lost it. She was ten years old
before making this discovery. After graduating from Washington Seminary, now known as The
Westminster Schools, she attended Smith College but withdrew in 1918. She returned to Atlanta to

Her husband regularly proofread her writings to help keep her motivated. By 1929, when her ankle
had healed and most of the book was written, she lost interest in pursuing her literary efforts, until a
MacMillan publisher, Howard Latham, came to Atlanta. Latham was scouring the South for
promising new Southern writers, and Mitchell agreed to escort him around Atlanta at the request of
her friend, who now worked for Latham. Latham was enchanted with Mitchell, and asked her if she
had ever written a book. When he found out that she had, he read it immediately and loved it.
MacMillan soon sent her an advance check to encourage her to complete the novel. Mitchell
completed her work in March, 1936. Mitchell's work relates the story of a rebellious Georgia woman
named Scarlett O'Hara and her interactions with friends, family and lovers in the midst of the South
during the Civil War and the reconstruction period. It also tells the story of the love that blossomed
between Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler. Mitchell wrote the book mostly for entertainment,
although it does have some educational value in helping you to understand better how things
