Effective Altruism In 2014, Americans gave more than three billion dollars to charities and
non–profits. Few people realize that America operates on the funding by philanthropy. But one
question arises: Are all donations spent efficiently, if by efficiently we mean every dollar spent has
the greatest impact on the needy? Effective Altruism, a movement regarded as generosity of nerds,
claims that it applies evidence to work out the best way to spend donations to change the world.
Though Effective Altruism has utilized its theory to gain much attention globally, it has failed to
concern equality of donations, the basic moral rights of people, and the priority of donations. There

Effective Altruism claims to support the poor people; in practice, it is not the poorest of the poor
that receives interventions. This is because that the poorest suffers multiple afflictions; they "tend to
lack important capabilities and skills, to be victims of social marginalization and geographical
remoteness, and to suffer from chronic illness or disability". This makes them the hardest to help.
For example, some of the poor needs necessary clothes and shoes, which are relatively cost–effective
comparing to surgeries and operating warplanes to airdrop food in the war zone. If the only

How do humans actually behave when faced with the decision to help others? The innate desire that
compels humans to help is called altruism by psychologists. Through this feeling, humans transform
from a selfish jerk to a more compassionate and caring person. Some psychologists believe that this
feeling stems from nature itself. Despite the fact that some altruistic acts originate from the pressures
of society, altruism predominantly comes from the survival of the fittest, the feeling of empathy, and

When doing community service I showed altruism. Altruism is helping another person with no
expectation of personal reward or benefit. I did community service before the assignment was
known about and I had never thought that I should receive something because I helped out. I just
enjoyed getting the opportunity to help younger people with activities that I enjoy. I also enjoy
that I can share my knowledge and passion for the activity. Altruism reminds me of having a job
