ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE Decline of Roman Empire lead to building of large churches called cathedrals in a big way with the spread of organized monasteries called order. Monastic orders include orders such as the Benedictine order (teachers), Augustinian order (preachers), the Cistercian order (farmers), the Clunaic order (artists), and Carthusian order (Ascetics). The monks used a simplified Roman style with thick load bearing walls stout columns, small window openings and semi circular arches that came to be known as the “Romanesque” style. Expansion of Romanesque architecture was linked with pilgrimage to Santiago, expansion of orders, crusades and development of feudal system. The style can be discovered throughout Europe with its regional variations. CHARACTERISTICS Harmonious proportions Thick and heavy walls and pillars Small windows Round arches supporting the roof. Round blind arches for decoration Sculptured decorations on portals, capitals and other surfaces. Painted decorations Plan: Retains basic plan of Early Christian Basilica ( Long three aisled nave intercepted by a transept and terminating in a semicircular apse crowned by a half dome ). Support arches are the combination of half segments of large hollow columns or a clustered group of small shafts. Cruciform in shape masonry and square or rectangle in section. Barrel Vault: The simplest type of vaulted roof Single arched surfaces extend from wall to wall, the length of the space to be vaulted. Barrel Vault requires strong support from solid walls. Groin Vault: Intersection of two barrel vaults at right angles. Ribbed Vault: In a ribbed vault, not only are the ribs spanning the vaulted area transversely but each vaulted bay has diagonal ribs. Pointed arch Vault: In Late Romanesque period, another solution came into use from regulating the height of diagonal and traverse ribs. Salvaged Columns In Italy, during this period, a great number of antique Roman columns were salvaged and reused in the interiors and on the porticos of churches. The marble columns are most durable and have stone horizontally bedded. Majority are vertically bedded and are sometimes of a variety of colors. They have retained the original roman capitals, of the Corinthian or Roman Composite style. Salvaged columns Drum Columns Hollow core columns Alteration of piers and columns. Building materials Brick – Italy, Poland , much Germany and parts of the Netherland. Limestone, granite – other areas Building stone – small and irregular pieces, bedded in thick mortar. Built more than 1800 years ago, the magnificent Pantheon building still stands as a reminder of the great Roman empire. Pantheon, with its thick brick walls and large marble columns, the Pantheon makes an immediate impression on visitors. But for its time the most remarkable part of the building is the more than 43 meter high some. It was the largest dome in the world until 1436 when the Florence Cathedral was constructed. At the top of the dome is a large opening, the oculus, which was the only source of light. The front portico has three rows of 8 columns, each one with a diameter of 1.5m. A huge bronze door gives access to the cylindrical building. Its Originally a temple for all pagan gods, the temple was converted into a church in 609. The Pantheon now contains the tombs of the famous artist Raphael and of several Italian Kings. Its ecclesiastic interior design contrast with the temple's structural design, but the marble floor - which features a design consisting of a series of geometric patterns - is still the ancient Roman original.

This is the only perfectly preserved ancient building of Rome. The building has been in continuous use for some 2000 years. It was founded in 27BC as a temple for many gods. It was rebuilt by Hadrian and delicated to the 7 planetary deities. It is now a catholic church It was perfected proportioned and remained the largest dome in the world for many centuries. It has a hollowed coffer ceiling built with concrete to reduce the weight. The entrance is supported by 16 granite columns. Inside it has 7 chapelscontain the tombs of the king of Italy and Ralphael, the painter. The most famous Roman dome, and the largest, is in the Pantheon, a building in Rome originally built as a temple. Dating from the 2nd century, it is an unreinforced concrete dome resting on a thick circular wall, or rotunda. The circular opening at the top of the dome is called the Oculus, and it provides light and ventilation for the interior. The height to the oculus and the diameter of the interior walls are the same, 43.3 meters (142 ft). It remained the largest dome in the world for more than a millennium and is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome Wikipedia on Dome.

- Placed in seven splendid niches between two Corinthian columns the used to be the seven gods linked to the worship of planets, or considered to be such: the Sun, the Moon, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Mars. With the advent of Christianity, some of them were used for small altars dedicated to Christian Martyrs.
- The columns were transported by wooden sledges to the Nile, barged to Alexandria, and put on vessels for a trip across the Mediterranean to the port of Ostia. From there the columns came up the Tiber by barge.
- The base was mostly built with basalt, top pumice
Holes may still be seen where the clamps which held the sculpture in place were fixed.
-The Roman Pantheon seems to exist independent of religious rule - more a tribute to the past than any specific spiritual figures.
