True Redemption: The Shawshank Redemption Essay
Did you ever sit down and think to yourself: What movie should I watch? The answer is The
Shawshank Redemption. The story was written by Stephen King, and then Frank Darabont wrote
the screenplay and directed the movie. The legendary Morgan Freeman plays Red, and Tim
Robbins plays Andy Dufresne. They did an amazing job playing the role that they were supposed
to. In this movie, you will be able to see how much of an impact one person can make. How one
person showed an inmate that no one should let the prison get to you. Andy Dufresne proved to Red
that even in prison you should have hope and dreams for a better future, that way you don't forget
who you are, who you were.

needs to do something with his life. Sitting in jail is constricting him because there isn't anything

One day while Red and Andy and a few other inmates were tarring the roof, Andy overheard the

able to help, and for payment, asks for three cold beers for each of the workers working on the roof.

The film that will be analyzed and discussed is the Shawshank Redemption, which was Director by
Frank Darabont and is a Story by Stephen King. It is based in 1946, a man named Andy Dufresne (
Tim Robbins) is convicted of killing his wife and her lover, and him going to prison and dealing
with the struggles of prison life as a truly innocent man. . "He's sentenced to a life term at the
Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis Red Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks

The key scene studied was "Beer on the Roof" from Shawshank Redemption. This scene reflects
both the ideas and features of this film. The ideas in this film are that innocent people can be
institutionalized, institutions work on fear and violence which does not fulfill the aim of
institutions and that compliance can be achieved through violence and corruption. In the scene
"Beer on the Roof" the setting has moved from inside to a building near the perimeter where it
feels as if it is outside. For the first time you see the green of grass and trees in the background.
You get a new aspect of the jail from the grey, oppressive, towering walls to the openness and
brightness of the roof. A characterization is a major technique used in this scene. This scene is the
turning point for Andy's life in prison. In the beginning Andy was alone in the laundry looking

The Shawshank Redemption is a very unique movie which involves many different personalities and
underlying themes. The personalities of the inmates are very interesting and when they are
combined they create a very fascinating plot which looks at prison life in a interesting and different
perspective than one normally thinks. The main characters are Andy Dufrense (Tim Robbins) and
Eliss "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman). These characters are well complimented by the
wise and simple old man, Brooks (James Whitmore), and the evil warden. The personalities of the

Andy asks for a rock hammer which Red gets for him. Red, knowing that Andy is vulnerable, gets
him on the tar duty and seems to take him under his wing. The friendship is very unique and they
both are very energetic with emotion. Bill Dupre of the News and Observer writes of their emotion

Freeman are wrought with depth, delicacy, and precision."
This is where the opportunistic side of Andy begins to be evident. After overhearing the guards
talking, he almost risks his life to tell the guard that he will help him keep the $30,000 that he
inherited. This shows that Andy had guts and that he wanted to survive. In return for his favor of
helping the guard, he gets his fellow workers ice cold beers on the last day. It is ironic because he
has quit drinking himself. Andy then begins to work in the library because the warden hears of his
talents in finance. This is where Andy first meets
Brooks. He use this opportunity to ask the state for more money to build a larger library. And
finally, the way Andy escapes is almost genius. Knowing that he is on the good side of the warden,
he devises a very interesting and successful plan of escape.
Overall, Andy blends in with the prison community through the good times and the bad (the sisters,
a group of homosexual rapists). His personality is one of a person who makes the most of what he

The director uses light and sound to build the scene. There is singing in the background with the first

there is more music. This time the music is only instrumental and is used to build suspense.

In The Shawshank Redemption, Brooks killed himself. Brooks had been in prison for a while and
he learned to live life and conformed to the prison way of life. Red says, "I couldn't hack it on the
outside. Been in here too long. I'm an institutional man now. Like old Brooks Hatlen was." Red
also explains how he's and institutional man similar to Brooks and how he'll also be unable to
conform to the outside world. I think Brooks took his life because he felt alone, it was like he

Perseverance is present in this novella, and present in most of the characters. Their motivation and
determination thrown towards a goal that might be far fetched, but in time can be attained. The two
characters that had maintained perseverance throughout the novella were, Andy Dufresne and Red.

Long/medium/close–up: Roger Deakins, the film's cinematographer, and director Frank Darabont
worked together to create this wonderful and classical film heavily utilizing long shots, close ups,
and slow zooms. Throughout the film "Shawshank Redemption", a series of shots take place

Darabont uses the angle of the camera for symbolic reasons as well, for example, the camera looks
down during the argument between Andy and Hadley. The camera's angle shot in this scene
indicated Andy had both power and effect over others.

The use of slow zooms in on the character is to help affect the audience on an intimate level.

Plot: The plot of Shawshank Redemption follows the usual plot format including the exposition,
rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion. Taken place in the 1940s, this film begins with
showing the audience the unfortunate events that led successful banker Andy Dufresne into prison
on life–sentence for a double murder. Andy, however, is innocent. For the beginning of Andy's time
in prison, the usual calamity and burdens had occurred. We view Andy's struggle being an innocent
man living with criminals. However, as the audience reaches the climax of the story, we see that

Critical Analysis of The Shawshank Redemption The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 movie
written and directed by Frank Darabont, featuring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The movie is
a classic and is considered as one of the all–time best. The principal theme of the movie remains
around the life of a prisoner, Andy, and tells us about the various circumstances and adversities

Shawshank Redemption Andy Dufresne's whole experience I believe is summed up in the very
important quote that "crawled through a river of shit and came out clean on the other side." This
statement made by Red holds many different meanings. Andy Dufresne went through many
hardships in "Shawshank" for a crime he never committed which is something no man should
endure. Andy Dufresne arrived at Shawshank with a very steely look in his eyes and a look of

Once Andy was the financier he started getting easier treatment and 'got looked after' by them. In
a way Andy was tarnished by this corrupt role his was playing for the Warden in which he started
laundering money around for Warden. Once he arrived in jail Andy was targeted by the sisters.
Bogs came up to Andy early and asked if 'anyone is getting at him yet' while Andy told Bogs he
was not a homosexual and walked away. Andy did not realise how much 'shit' was going to be
thrust upon him. 'The sisters' now had their target set on him especially the leader of the 'sisters'
Bogs. Bogs looked at Andy as a sort of challenge. The isster persued him until he was alone and
then the Bogs and two of the sisters came and assualted him. Once the sisters got a hold of him it
became a routine and every so often "Andy would show up with fresh new bruises. The sisters
kept at him and Andy kept on trying to fend them off and that's how it went for According to Red a
"vulnerable newcomer is repeatedly subjugated and victimised during his first two years". Although
being victimised raped and picked on by the sisters Andy never broke. The sisters then cornered him
in the projection room and Andy is threatened with a sharp steel spike in his ear if he doesn't perform

Analysis of Shawshank Redemption Essay
The movie of the Shawshank Redemption is based on a short story by Steven King. The movie
shows how prison life affects prisoners during their sentence in jail and after when they are
released. The director concentrates mostly on the personal cost of adapting to prison life and how
some convicts, once they conform, lose the ability to survive beyond the barbed wire and iron bars.
As a character puts it, 'These [prison] walls are funny. First you hate them, then you get used to
them, then you start to depend on them.' The director shows us to what extent prisoners can be
made to 'depend on them'. The two episodes that I will analyse are examples of two different 'paths'

The first episode is the release of Brooks and his life on the outside. When he leaves the prison he
is dressed very smartly in a dark suit. We next see him on the bus. The camera is set in front of
him and we see him sitting with his feet and hands on the rail before him. The director has given
him a crow like image. From this we interpret that something bad will happen. When he steps out
the camera follows him down the road. While the episode is going on, Brooks is narrating his
feelings. When he wants to cross the road he is abruptly taken back as he sees an automobile pass
by. He says that there are many more automobiles now than there were before and doesn't like the
way the world has turned out to be. After, we see him feeding the birds. He says that he hopes that
Jake might "come by and say 'hello'". I believe that this is the scene in which we see Brooks in a
most open space, it gives us hope that he will do alright. Brooks is placed in a half–way house and
is given a job at a supermarket. When he sleeps we see he is very agitated. The camera films him
from above (crane) and in a voice–over he tells us he is often scared at night. We can compare this
to some of the men's, including Andy's, first nights at Shawshank Prison. Working as a
