The Great Gatsby Literary Essay
In The Great Gatsby, a classic novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick Carraway is in love with
Jordan Baker, George Wilson is in love with Myrtle Wilson and Jay Gatsby is in love with Daisy
Buchanan. Regrettably, all of these women are unworthy of the love and affection bestowed upon
them by these men. Throughout the course if this essay, the love between these individuals will be
analysed and the reasons why these women are unworthy will be highlighted.
Nick Carraway is initially introduced to Jordan Baker by his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, when he goes
to their house for dinner. Jordan immediately presents herself as aloof, and makes Nick feel
uncomfortable. This is portrayed by his statement: "– indeed, I was almost surprised into...show more

She, however, takes advantage of the fact that Gatsby is willing to do anything for her, and
convinces him to take responsibility for Myrtle's death, which she caused! Gatsby is so blinded
by his love for her that he does not even realise that he is being manipulated. For example when
questioned by Nick as to whether or not Daisy was driving when the accident causing Myrtle's
death occurred, Gatsby responds by saying: "Yes... but of course I'll say I was." This lie eventually
leads to his death, and Daisy does not even have the decency to attend his funeral.
It can therefore be seen that Jordan, Myrtle and Daisy are not the slightest bit worthy of the love of
Nick, George and Gatsby respectively. Jordan is dishonest and careless, in complete contrast to
Nick's honesty and integrity, and lies to him throughout the entire relationship; Myrtle has no respect
for George and never treats him kindly, and indirectly causes his death, whilst Daisy takes advantage
of Gatsby's love and allows him to take responsibility for her actions, which ultimately leads to his
death.

In fact, this has always been the main task of storytellers. Every story
matters to the person living it, and a writer's job is to tell the universal stories, the
stories that reveal the story of every person on the earth.
When writer's have asked other writers to explain why he or she writes, you
may get some interesting insights into what draws people to the written word. Despite
the fact that writer's spend a fair amount of time sitting and staring into space, every
writer is driven. Single–minded. Obsessed. They are driven because they love writing
and want to keep doing it. Some writers even say that it's all they could ever do.

"Examples of My Favorite Pieces of Literature" There are many different types of Literature, and
throughout high school, most of us read and study famous pieces written by popular authors. I
enjoyed reading and studying all types of literature in school, but my favorite was a story or
poem that talked about how to overcome the obstacles and unforeseen circumstances we
sometimes face in life. I chose the following three pieces because each one had an impact on me
and gave me motivation and strength to face and overcome challenges in my life. Each piece
demonstrates that the outcome of our inner happiness or success lies in our reaction to
unforeseen circumstances and the choices we make to overcome them. My first selection of
literature is one of my favorite poems by Robert Frost. I read "The Road Not Taken" in my high
school junior English class. I like this poem and still remember it because I felt a deep connection
to it. In high school, peer pressure is very challenging, and this poem made me feel better about
making good decisions not to follow the crowd just to fit in or be popular. The poem begins with
a traveler walking in the woods. He soon comes to a fork in a road, and he has to make a choice
between two paths. Unable to see what lies ahead, he examines both roads closely and makes a

The short story, "Roman Fever" by Edith Wharton, reveals numerous popular literary elements. Some
of the most prominent examples of literary elements are irony, symbolism, and foreshadowing. All
three elements create the feel and atmosphere of the short story. They add illustration, mystery, and
humor to the storyline.

My Literary Impact Of Reading And My Reading
My earliest reading memories are of me reading the little books from the bookstore that would have
the difficulty level marked by a number like a red 1 or green 2. The book I remember reading in
particular was the Jungle Book, I was around four or five years old. The first and probably best
literary sponsor I've ever had is my mother. From a young age my mom was teaching me big words
and buying all types of books, like Baby Einstein and little level 1 paperback books. My mom made
sure I knew words that would be considered long and complicated for a 4–year–old, but as a result
when other kids were saying something simple like "I'm sorry" I was saying "I Apologize" at 4! The
literary impact of my mom has greatly and positively affected my literacy. As I got older I started to
grow a deep interest in biographies and books about people's daily lives and cultures. I began to read
several books about Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and Al Capone just to name a few. I also would
watch movies or shows then read the books they were based on, I know that sounds backward but
that's the way I liked to do it. I read books like Hunger Games, Life of Pi, and Game of Thrones:

My Experience In Literature
I remember some of the first books I read as a child, before being introduced to the massive variety
of literature that can be found everywhere. I remember focusing on the images and drawings that the
illustrators made which brought these stories to life. I remember most significantly the author, Kevin
Henkes, and his different interpretations on dealing with solitude as a child. I remember relating to
the mice which he created within the stories. I remember imagining myself within the books, hoping
to join in on the endless adventures that the characters went on. I remember discovering my growing

You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the
same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was

poem, "What it's Like to Be a Black Girl", by Patricia Smith, (1991), are both about the coming of
age of young girls and the conflicts that they encounter. The two pieces explore issues that most
young girls have with their bodies and others during their puberty years. The literary elements that

"First of all, it's being 9 years old and feeling like you're not finished". It's as though, the changes
that are to come are going to be better than what's already been. The main change she hopes is that
she will be considered beautiful because unlike Connie in the first story this 9 year old girl don't

Although there are many different literary techniques used in these two pieces imagery is an
element that is depicted in the both of them. Imagery is a literary technique that appeals to the
senses of its readers. It gives the reader a visual of what the writer is feeling about what he or she
is writing. In the poem, "What it's Like to Be a Black Girl", by Smith, (1991), imagery is used to
display the writers feelings of being black and not necessary proud of being black, "it's dropping
food coloring in your eyes to make them blue and suffering their burn in silence". The writer
could be using the word blue as a way to depict the wanting to have beautiful blue eyes like many
White women as opposed to the dark brown or black eyes that she probably possessed. Imagery is
also seen in the way how the writer explains her encounter with the opposite sex. "It's finally having

In a rapidly developing world, the definition of literature goes beyond what the readers see and
perceive. It provides a platform for us to open our minds to ambiguities of meaning, while exploring

taught me to support my own point of view and trust my instincts and interpretations. The

Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" (DiYanni, 2007, p. 79–84). The story takes place in the South after

Reading : My Literary Journey
As far back as I can remember, being read to and reading has been a part of my life. Before I was
able to read, I loved to listen to people read to me. Reading books helps develop a person's
knowledge and vocabulary. It also can help a person become a great writer. In my case, it hasn't
helped. I have never been a great writer. My literary journey has three main parts, reading, speeches,
and writing. The biggest one by far is reading. My story starts with going on family trips, we

made it so easy. With my kindle I am able to access thousands of books and able to read them all. I
would even say that I am addicted to books. It very hard for me to put down a book and do other
things. I love reading because you are able to live countless amounts of people's lives. I lose
myself in a different person's world. I cry when something awful happens and feel joy when
something favorable happens. In a certain mystery series I was recently reading, I became so
engrossed in the book that reading them gave me terrible anxiety and I couldn't finish the series
because it left me so emotionally drained. It wasn't a pleasant feeling. Most of the time I enjoy

What is Literature?
Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering
on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just lately I have known that literature also includes
songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things
that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones
that comprise literature. Considering this description of what literature is, the coverage of literature
seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would

Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on anovel based on the
culture of one. It would likely be the same if their culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then
they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining
literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable.
Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But
then again, since people may have different perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain
work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a
literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be
expected to really value the letter while her classmate may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a
whole.
Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of
literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every possible definition of what literature is,

Furthermore, the writer has used the "Inverted Pyramid" technique, meaning, all the key
information is at the top with the least important are arranged in descending order. By the reading
the first couple of paragraphs or so, the readers can easily get a good overview of what the article is
all about.
The structure of the poem is made up of five stanzas of four lines each. The poem is well
organised which, in my opinion, that the poet has planned a certain course of action. The one word
sentence "Anything" or other short sentences used throughout the poem sets the pace and tone of
the poem. It may have been used by the poet to force the message into the readers' mind. This
works well with the violent actions and images in the poem. They also break the flow and rhythm
which helps to create the mood and set an angry tone in the poem and also suggesting a 'broken'
character. Enjambment is the continuation of a sentence form one line or couplet into the next. It is
used by Duffy to give the stanzas the rhythm of natural speech which makes the persona sounds
more violent and aggressive.
The linguistic and stylistic features used in the newspaper article are factual and accurate, clear and
concise to inform its readers. It also authenticates and supports claims and adds weight to its content.
The use of quoted references confirmed the factuality of the writer's information
